Lenovo T490 won't boot in Ultra Docking Station after Windows 2021-07 Cumulative Update (KB5004237)

2021-07-15, 16:43 PM

I have a Lenovo T490 (type 20N2) docked in a Thinkpad Ultra Docking Station (40AJ135US).

After initiating the installation routine of the Windows 2021-07 Cumulative Update (KB5004237), upon restart I noticed that the t490 wouldn't boot past the Lenovo splash screen. I removed peripherals and tried again and it remained stuck.

Finally I removed the t490 from the docking station itself and the t490 was finally able to continue booting and complete the installation routine.

However, the problem appears to have remained and I cannot restart (or start up) the T490 while it is docked. I have to make sure it is undocked for the T490 to successfully boot before connecting it to the docking station again.

Hello Aharonium!

Welcome to community forums

Can you try uninstalling the driver/firmware of the docking station under the device manager? After the restart, reconnect the dock and reinstall the driver first manually followed by the firmware. A restart is needed in-between as well.

You can get it here; https://support.lenovo.com/us/en/solutions/pd500173-thinkpad-ultra-docking-station-overview-and-service-parts

Update us on how it goes.

Will do, but can you give me a little bit more direction as to what exactly corresponds to the docking station in the device manager.

The only device explicitly named "docking station" is the Thinkpad Dock USB Audio under Audio Inputs and Outputs... but this is probably not what I need to uninstall... or is it? Perhaps there is something else and I've missed it?

I uninstalled the Thinkpad Dock USB Audio driver under Audio Inputs and Outputs in the Device Manager.

Restarted. Then I reinstalled the driver, updated the firmware (to 3.3.3) and restarted again.

No change -- still won't boot unless I disconnect from the dock first.

Try loading the default BIOS setup. Once in the BIOS, press the F9 key to load the default settings then press the F10 key to save it.

If the issue is the same, try running the Windows troubleshooter. If none, run the system file checker;
Open the command prompt and run as administrator. Type sfc /scannow then hit enter.

Let us know how it goes.

I reset the BIOS on the T490. Windows troubleshooter and system scan indicate no problems.

The main problem persists: the T490 is unable to restart (or cold start) so long as the T490 connection with the Ultra Docking Station hasn't been reset. Once the dock is disconnected and reconnected, the T490 can boot without any problem (after being powered off/on).

This is a slight improvement over what I first reported (that the T490 wouldn't boot so long as it was docked). The t490 now can boot while docked, so long as the connection with the dock has been reset and power cycled.
