Lenovo T530 - Ultra HD monitor / Multiple Monitor Support / Docking Station

2014-01-17, 20:20 PM

Hello :)

This is my laptop - ThinkPad T530 (2392-3QG), configuration: i5-3210M(3.1GHz),4GB RAM,500GB 7200rpm HD,15.6in 1600x900 LCD,Intel HD Graphics,DVD,Intel 802.11agn wireless,1Gb Ethernet,UltraNav,Secure Chip,Fingerprint reader,Camera,6c Li-Ion,Win7 Pro 64

I have few questions concerning my future multiple monitor upgrades. As I am programmer, as much space you have its better. So I am going to buy multiple monitors for better work efficiency. I am thinking to buy one Ultra HD monitor to work in vertical mode (coding) and second monitor would be QHD - 2560 x 1440 27 inch monitor which would be in horizontal mode (chat, reading stuff), display on laptop would be turned off (do not need it, when I will have this two huge beauties :). So I am going to buy too

  • ThinkPad Mini Dock Plus Series 3 with USB 3.0 – 90W (433815U - U.S.) > which does have 2x Display ports.

My main monitor which I want to buy is ThinkVision Pro2840m, which is 28 inches Ultra HD monitor.

Question 1) Will my laptop (Graphics Card) support such a resolution?

I did some research, for Intel HD Graphics 4000 should works fine to work in Ultra HD resolution. But I also read somewhere new Ultra HD Monitors has to be connected viac Display Port 1.2 to handle 3840x2160 in 60Hz.

Question 2) Does have my laptop miniDisplay port version 1.2, to handle fluently 3840x2160 in 60Hz?

Question 3) Will my laptop (Graphics Card) support 1x 28 inch ThinkVision Pro2840m Ultra HD monitor and 27 inch QHD (2560 x 1440) monitor fluently? Laptop display would be turned off. Only programming and reading stuff, no video, AutoCad,graphics stuff or gamming.

Question 4) Will ThinkPad Mini Dock Plus Series 3 with USB 3.0 handle both monitors via Display ports?

I read somewhere it does only support two monitors maximum up to 2560 x 1600. So if this is true, my only solution would be to plug in ThinkVision Pro2840m to MiniDisplay Port on the laptop port and second monitor 27 QHD monitor to Display port on the docking station. Could this work?

Please could you help me with this? I need to be 100% sure to buy next upgrades in 1500-2000 euros to my laptop could handle it, if it would not support and I would order then what I should do with it :(, after that I needed to change a latop, which I would like not, because is the most amazing laptop I ever had :) or limit to 2x 27 inches QHD (2560 x 1440) monitors.

Question 5) Will my laptop (Graphics card) support 2x 27 inches QHD (2560 x 1440) monitors via docking station fluently?

Many thanks in advance to person who would help me :)

Re: Lenovo T530 - Ultra HD monitor / Multiple Monitor Support / Docking Station

2014-01-20, 18:37 PM

3 days went and no answer :/

I know send a second email, i tried 2 times to talk on lenovo chat support (everytime i was given email where i should write), once i was told that tech support will look into it 2 days passed nothing changed :/

I have been looking on the forum but I have not found a topic which would have discussing this issue.

Think about how many T530, W530, T430, T430S, T430U and docking stations were sold. How many customers would like to buy 4k monitor for reasonable price 799$ if you care about resolution, not about high quallity IPS panel which monitors like that costs 2000-3000 euros. I mean there will be so many customers intersted in this and ofcourse huge companies.

Think about how many customers will contact Lenovo or companies who does sell Lenovo and there is not relevant information yet. How much time and costs would be saved :)

I was told buy it and test it, I said okay, I buy it, it will not work and I would have products for 2000 euros which does not work togehter, one is new (monitor) which I could not return, because many sellers do not take returns. Then there will be a pissed of customer :/

Try to think about docking station there was written maximum of 2 displays in resolution 2560 x 1600, but the docking station was released in 2011 or 2012? In that time there was not a monitor with 4k resolution, how they could test it? If it does have some traffic limits, then it should be written docking station does not support 4k resolution, or it does (then it should be changed).

I saw connected X1 Carbon via miniDisplay port to 4k monitor and it worked fine, but where I can find that my laptop include miniDisplay Port version 1.2 which needs to be to support 4k resolution in 60Hz and my graphics card will support this resolution (it should, but many manufactures modify graphics cards or processors...)

Many thanks to person who will help me and I guess every customer would be greatful if this information would be provided in tech spes / datasheets...

Lenovo are you here? Is somebody testing it? Trying it?

If yes, atleast write, we are looking at this problem....

So many views and no reply... Did I write this on good place? Anybody could help who should I contact or write too? I am not from US, so there would be diffucult to call to US phone line and costs would be huge and for 100% no operator could answer all my questions...

Thanks for any advice :) and many thanks to person who would solve my problem :)

this is a peer to peer community. Not everyone has the same equipment that you have.

The displayport on the T520 should handle 4k resolution, since i use mine T420 with 3840x1200 @ 60 hz through the onboard displayport. I don't have the T520, but this resolution is definitely doable with the displayport and onboard intel graphics card.

Thank you for your reply :)

I will try it as soon as new monitors will be available in my country :)

Hope someone from Lenovo tests it and update datasheets.

Hi milos,

I wouldn't recommend using the Pro2840m in portrait mode to do anything. Its not an IPS screen, and viewing it in portrait mode rises a very strange effect between white background and black text. Its very difficult to explain.

I tried this about 3 days ago (to use two of our Pro2840m's that way) but it's very stressful on one's eyes. You can rotate only good IPS panels in that way.

Also as far as the huge bandwidth necessary to push a 4Kx30bpp@60Hz signal is concerned, the DisplayPort 1.2 spec JUST manages it. Which means that there won't be any bandwidth left over for a second monitor on the same carrier signal. However you are going to make use of the docking port, and perhaps the wiring on it is such that it can pull out 2 independant DisplayPort signals out of the main board. On an Intel HD Graphics 4000 I truely doubt that! Look to see in their white sheets if its TOTAL lanes of bandwidth can push beyond 21.6 Gbit/s.

The safest option for you, at this point of time, given your current hardware is to take what your hardware was designed to handle at the time it came out. And that's a max of dual 2560x1600 resolutions.

In any case, post your results if you order the upgrades and know the result. :smileywink:
