Lenovo ThinkPad T14 Gen 1 | Upable to upgrade BIOS using ISO

2020-12-18, 14:23 PM

I have a Lenovo ThinkPad T14 Gen1 (AMD CPU). It is running bios version 1.9 (1.09). This is the version that came installed when I bought the laptop directly from Lenovo AU website.

Since I am running Linux, the only option to upgrade the BIOS was using the bootable CD. I tried downloading BIOS version1.27 (r1buj58wd.iso) and created a bootable USB Drive from it. When I trying to boot from the USB from the BIOS option during startup, it is not booting from the USB Drive, just returning back to the list of boot options again. I even tried bios version 1.25 (r1buj56wd.iso) and had the same result.

I have a Lenovo ThinkPad E14 Gen1 running Linux as well. The exact same process of upgrading the BIOS works fine on the E14.

Has anyone been successful upgrading the bios on the T14 Gen 1 (AMD CPU) using bootable CD?

I managed to find the solution. In the BIOS options, Security > Secure Boot was enabled which was restricting booting up from the BIOS Update (Bootable CD). I disabled the Secure Boot option and was able to upgrade the BIOS from the BIOS Update (Bootable CD).

Are you using the instructions in the readme (requires windows or windows vm) to create the flash drive or some other technique?

I am using the same technique as I use for my E14. I am using the Linux dd command

dd if=r1buj58wd.iso of=/dev/sdb

I haven't done this method in a while but if you write hiren's boot CD to a usb drive you can boot into a full Windows 10 environment directly from USB. You can then install Lenovo Vantage and perform the BIOS update.

- Use a USB 3.0 drive and slot if possible, loading Windows 10 off a USB is slow

- You might have to change where Lenovo Vantage is installed to another USB drive if there isn't space on the c:

- Avoid trying to install any other updates

I am using Ubuntu and it does not have an integrated GUI for upgrading the BIOS. There is a `fwupdmgr` utility but it did not report anything that could be upgraded.

I saw that you found a solution but I wanted to point out to anyone else that comes here that Hiren's bootCD PE is Windows but it's not an installation and boots off a USB just for the purpose of using Lenovo Vantage

Considering there is now a firmware update for the SSD it's usually easier to get that done in Windows.

Hiren's bootCD PE is a third party solution. Would you trust a third party when it comes to your BIOS? I definitely wouldn't from a security perspective. It is better to stick with what Lenovo offers you. For anyone not using Windows as their main OS on their Thinkpad, the BIOS Bootable CD is a much quicker and safer option than Hiren's bootCD PE.
