Lenovo Thinkpad T490- Cannot boot from USB

2020-04-11, 21:24 PM

I probably screwed myself here, but am hoping to see if anyone has a solution.

I got a new motherboard from Lenovo as there was an issue with mine. When I got my thinkpad back, I was locked out by BitLocker (despite never having set up BitLocker). Read online, called Lenovo, called Microsoft- this seems to be a known issue that can happen after servicing, and it seemed the only way around it was to do a clean install.

Well I had already spent hours with customer service, so I thought maybe I could follow online instructions. I wiped the disk clean from command prompt (I wiped both disks listed (disk 0 and 1). That finally got rid of the dreaded blue BitLocker screen that nothing else could. I have Windows 10 on a USB, but am unable to get anything else to happen from the Boot menu. No matter how I restart or cold start, and no matter what key I push (F11, F12, shift, enter) I get to the same boot menu (pictured here: https://imgur.com/a/vzISZvH .

When I choose the USB drive, the screen goes black for a few seconds, then returns to the boot menu. Same for any other option that I choose. Have I ruined something here? Any advice is appreciated.

How was the USB drive prepared (partitioning, formatting, tool used if any, ...) and what is your boot mode (UEFI, legacy, both...) ?

Did you create the USB drive with Windows Installation Media using Microsoft's Media Creation Tool, and even if so, have you tried recreating the Installation Media?

Try setting the boot mode in the BIOS to Diagnostic using the Startup >> Boot Mode option as it may provide more details on why it is not booting.

Try resetting the BIOS to Setup Defaults by pressing F9 then F10 to save and exit.

Create Windows 10 installation media

I just used the Windows 10 installation media they offer, so did not choose anything about partitions, etc.

I can't even find where to see what my boot mode is- the imgur I linked (not sure if you can see it) is literally the only screen I can get to.

On your T490, the default is to have secure boot on. You need to create the USB stick on a computer that is configured to have UEFI booting, or you can turn secure boot off and turn on the compatibility option in the BIOS.
