Less battery after resume from sleep, than from reboot

2010-03-11, 21:43 PM

It seems to me, that my t500's battery lasts longer if I do fresh boots, than if I resume from sleep.

Anyone else notice this?

The system does use up batter while in sleep mode. It simply shutdown all unnecessary components but there are still juice flowing through memory etc.

A compromise would be putting it in hibernate mode where memory get flushed into drive. This way you get faster boot time w/o using up battery. However I have so much problem with inconsistent restarting from hibernate from the past that I generally stay away from it.

I am saying that your battery dies faster if you work an hour after coming out of sleep, than if you work an hour after a fresh boot.

Thanks!

Then it probably is a matter of inaccurate (too high) battery indicator. When you come out of fresh boot, you lost very little battery from when you last shut it down. When you come out of sleep mode, you probably have less battery than what your indicator is telling you. So assuming your work load take up the same amount of juice each time, you start out with much less battery when you came out of sleep mode.

If you look through the forums, you'll find that this is a widespread problem with anyone that has Switchable graphics. Basically, when you go into sleep and come back, both graphics cards are turned on, so you'll draining lots of power. To fix, you have to manually switch back and forth from energy-saving to high performance and back to energy-savings.

Unfortunately for me, I can't even switch to energy-savings graphics for some reason. Anyone know why? It says I should turn off 3d or video apps and disconnect external displays. But even when nothing is running, and external display is disconnected, I get this message.
