Multiple displays - Bad resolution T14 Gen1 with dock

2021-09-14, 22:45 PM

T14 Gen 1 20S1S4DV00 - ThinkPad USB-C Dock Gen2 - ThinkVision monitors - display port cables

I'm stumped. Individually monitors get 2560x1440 resolution,

Regardless of which cable I use.

Add the second monitor and one of them only gets 1024x768.

Regardless of which cable and which port.

Regardless of daisy chaining.

Tried to use an HDMI. Same results. One HDMI - good. One DP - good. Both - same situation.

EXCEPT if I plug the HDMI into the laptop itself. Then 2560x1440 on each.

Took it into my work. Hooked it up there. It worked. Two different workstations. But home. Nope. What could it be?

Hello K-Fisch!

Greetings

Just to clarify, you brought the laptop to your work and plug it into another docking station and it worked? If yes, what is the model of the docking station?

According to the product spreadsheet, the computer can support up to 2 external monitors; supports external monitors via HDMI® (up to 4096 x 2160 @24Hz), USB-C (up to 4096 x 2304 @60Hz) or Thunderbolt™ (up to 4096 x 2304 @60Hz) and you can refer to this link: https://psref.lenovo.com/Product/ThinkPad/ThinkPad_T14_Gen_1_Intel?MT=20S1

You can also refer to the docking station setup here: https://support.lenovo.com/ph/en/solutions/pd029622-display-and-video-output-configurations-docking-stations#Ultra%20Docking

Try installing the dock driver first. Restart the computer and install the firmware. You can get it here: https://pcsupport.lenovo.com/us/en/accessories/acc500106

Let us know how it goes.

At work, I brought this docking station and used it. It worked there.

We've updated the video and docking station firmwares.

The only thing I can imagine is the cables that I have at home are not good enough. I ordered new ones and they should arrive today.

Otherwise, we're at a loss.

Well, I bought two high end displayport cables. It didn't fix the issue.

If it's the dock with part number 40AS  then this are the expected results.  Your system support DP 1.2 only. You need a DP1.4 capable system to support both monitors with its native QHD resolution at 60Hz.
If the monitors support QHD resolution at a much lower display frequency like 30-40 Hz, then you can try configuring one of the monitors for such resolution.

Took it into my work. Hooked it up there. It worked. Two different workstations.

This were different systems that probably support DP1.4.

The Thunderbolt3 dock  (40AN)  support dual QHD monitors at 60Hz with the T14 Gen1.

The new Intel T14 Gen2 systems do support  DP1.4.

Tech-Savvyness does not replace reading the fine manual.
