Re: My T400 Hangs a the boot stage

2012-04-13, 16:33 PM

Simliar solution, slightly different technique!

For general information, i attempted the 'battery out, press button 3 times etc.' and this did not work.  After searching through various forums, i found another method.  Laughingly, i gave it a go whilst i continued reading as i expected little success but, it worked.  Why?  No idea.  Anyway, same concept but, slightly different procedure:

1) Remove battery

2) Press power button 9 times for 2 seconds with a 1 second gap between

3) On 10th press, hold down power button for 30 seconds.

And this worked.  Lord only knows why.  More interestingly was the cause of this problem.

I have 3 USB devices plugged into the laptop and after fixing i plugged them in one at a time and restarted each time.  Turns out the problem was a faulty external hard-drive.  Interestingly, the problem was not resolved clearly after removing the device and needed this 'Discharging' process to bring the laptop back to life.

Technology - A thousand faults and a thousand ways to solve each one!!  Living the dream.

I don't know if this has been fully answered, but a lot of issues I see that causes this is due to the USB port having a prong smashed against the metal casing causing the short.

A simple paperclip/tweezers bending the prong to stop it from touching the metal casing is a quick fix to this.

I disconnected all power sources on the r400, including the bios battery and followed the instructions that mar left unplugged for more than one hour. Followed Mark's instructions on how to clear the bios but unsuccessful. Any other suggestions?

Marcolor,

There seem to be multiple possible causes for a system that won't boot.  Some of my original suggestions were aimed at clearing out any corrupt values in cmos, reloading BIOS default values, etc.

I've seen several members noting the broken / shorted USB port symptoms.  Have you checked your USB ports for damage?  See this article.

Best regards,

Mark
