New Firmware for T400s Samsung SSD?

2009-11-24, 18:35 PM

Hello,

I just installed the new Firmware for my Samsung SSD - upgraded from

Samsung SSD 128 GB MMCRE28G8MXP-0VBL1-VBM1DL1Q

to

Samsung SSD 128 GB MMCRE28G8MXP-0VBL1-VBM1EL1Q

But what does the Update do? Does it bringt trim support?

Just curious, if it does, I could stop worrying about it :)

Actually most of the latest Samsung drives should be able to support trim, but Samsung hasn't implemented it as of time of release of the drives. The are promising an update for month.

Hi Jeho and Co.

I have the same question.

What was this firmware about. Is TRIM support or what was fixed?

Did the firmware update on my X301 (2776-LEG) having a, I guess older, 128GB samsung SSD: MMXCQE28G8MUP-0VA

The computer seems to be a bit faster on boot (about 5 sec.), but unfortunately I was too eager to get the firmware update and did not do a proper analyze - so it may be just the placebo effect.

Data rate using the updated firmware and CrystalDiskMark:

SETTINGS: 5 runs, 1000MB

READ:

seq: 96.43

512K: 93.41

4K: 13.76

WRITE:

seq:74.67

512K: 26.92

4K: 5.82

Not particular fast writing however this was just after the update.

All the best,

Christian

Re: New Firmware for T400s Samsung SSD?

I had read on one of the forums that the MMXCQE28G8MUP-0VA drive wasn't firmware upgradable by us users.  I was happy to see that it was.

I would be curious (like everyone else), to know if this firmware included Samsung's version of Trim.  As I understand it, Samsung doesn't support TRIM, but does have a similar clean up utility that runs independant of the OS.

I am guessing that this firmware version didn't have that utility in it, because of they did, I am guessing Samsung would have made a big announcement about it.  The fact they they didn't make a big deal about this release makes me guess that it had minor updates.

But, as a user that has the older MMXCQE28G8MUP-0VA drive, I was happy to know that I could even apply a firmware update.  Hopefully a TRIM like utility will come in the next firmware update.

I've searched the web up and down and can find no indication of what these firmware updates do.  I don't understand how that is - they expect us to just swallow any update they release without telling you what it does??

Re: New Firmware for T400s Samsung SSD?

I know the firmware upgrade instructions are clear in that they say the upgrade must be done using the Ultrabay optical drive, but I'm wondering if anyone has had any luck applying the upgrade if they don't have an optical drive in their system.

I love my x301 and havent missed the optical drive in the 3+ months I've owned it.  I thought I was safe by not getting one, and then Lenovo makes us have one to apply the SSD firmware.

Thank you for any suggestions.

So am I correct to understand that the VBM1EL1Q firmware does NOT support ATA TRIM?  Can someone confirm this?  As Jeho says, there is now a firmware version from Samsung that does support TRIM and is available to those who have e.g. a Corsair branded SSD from Samsung.  It would sure be nice to have some more information.

From information I gathered looking around other forums, the VBM1EL1Q firmware supports internal garbage collection, but on NTFS (i.e. Windows) ONLY, and does NOT support ATA TRIM (i.e. VBM1EL1Q is equivalent to VBM1901Q on Corsair, which is not the same as the new VBM19C1Q on Corsair that supports TRIM.  If you speak German, then you can read about it on hardwareluxx).

Lenovo, if you are out there listening, please send us the new firmware from Samsung that supports ATA TRIM.  We don't all use NTFS, and we need this feature in order to get on with our lives.
