New i7 8550U T580: Cpu always at full clock even when idle

2018-03-21, 7:07 AM

Hello everyone!

I'm new to this forum as I just bought a nice T580 with i7 8550U Intel CPU.

So far the machine is amazing, it's my first Lenovo (I'm coming from a MS Surface Pro 3) and I'm happy with it, except for one thing:

When AC is plugged on, the CPU clock always goes to max speed (3.8-4.0GHz), even if the load is at 0%. That means that the laptot heats more and the fan kicks in very fast if you start to do something, even if it's only web browsing. That's really annoying.

Everything goes back to normal if I unplug AC and work on battery. The CPU immediately lowers the clock, as you can see on my screens.

Here are all the tricks I already tried:

- Changing power modes by clicking on the battery icon on the desktop. This doesn't do anything when AC is plugged. But this works perfectly if I unplug it.

- Resetting the BIOS. No changes.

- Changing BIOS AC power settings with the same values as for battery power settings. No changes on Windows 10, still at 100% clock speed.

- Restoring Windows 10. 2 times. Still no changes. I even used the Lenovo recovery tool to factory reset it. It's not a software problem as this happens already after the very first startup of Windows 10.

- Downgrade the BIOS to rev. 1.06. No changes. I'm currently using the latest 1.09.

I don't know what to do now. I asked some people on Reddit and they don't seem to have the problem. I run out of ideas.

Could you help me?

Thank's in advance for all your answers!

Florian

Welcome to the Community

Are the drivers from Lenovo support site installed?
Are you able to change the power plan? What's current power plan for AC plugged-in?

Hi,

All drivers are up to date.

Power plan is in normal mode, I also have no delay mode and airplane mode.

If I go on the advanced settings of the normal mode power plan, I can see that minimal speed for the CPU on both AC and battery is 5%.

What's current setting of Intel SpeedStep Technology in the BIOS Setup (menu Config)? Any chance it's disabled?

No it's activated, as is the Lenovo option for lower the CPU speed, can't remember the name.

I already tried to play with these 2 options without any success.

What is strange is that this is only when AC is plugged, perfect behaviour on battery.

My T580 is the same way, always at 4GHz on AC power, regardless of power plan.  But I don't find that it gets hot or that the fan runs unnecessarily, and especially not at idle.  I've been using this system exclusively since January.  I'm guessing that this is just how the 8th-gen processors work.  I'm trying to confirm it with a hardware guy (I'm a software guy).

I just realized that this 4GHz behavior on my T580 happens when the Win10 power slider is set to "best performance" as shown below.  If I change it to either the middle setting, or the left-most setting, then the CPU frequency is allowed to decrease.  Is this the same for you?

It's exactly what it should be but as I wrote in my first post, this doesn't make any difference on mine when AC is plugged. Everything works well then if I just unplug it.

Solved by installing a clean Windows 10 with the MS Media Creation tool. Everything works well now.

Since you have been using your T580 for a month or more, wondering whether you noticed any coil whine (high pitch sound, supposedly from graphic card)? The only exhaustive online review (notebookcheck.net) says T580 has this problem. And also heating issues and so-so battery life (just about 9hours). What is your experience?
