No audio after resuming from SLEEP on a Thinkpad T510

2011-07-12, 22:47 PM

I have a Thinkpad T510 (4384-2RU) running Windows XP and have been experiencing this problem since the day I got it.

If I have headphones connected to the audiojack, and then I put the laptop to sleep, after I wake it up again, the sound is gone. Bear in mind that I normally wake it up without having the headphones connected anymore.

Sometimes, if I re-connect the headphones, the sound comes back, I can then disconnect them and sound would come out of the normal laptop speakers with no problem.

But most times, even if I reconnect the headphones, the audio doesn't come back. I am forced to reboot which is highly annoying.

Why does this happen? I have seen that if I wake up the laptop with the headphones still connected, then I don't experience the problem. Also, if put it to sleep without having headphones connected, I also don't have the problem.

I have narrowed this down to having audio crashing if I put it to sleep with headphones in, then waking it up without them.

This is not how it's supposed to work, I should be able to have audio at all times regardless of whether I have headphones connected to the jack or not.

Please note that a solution won't be installing Windows 7, this is a company laptop and they won't let me update the software.

How can I fix this problem so it doesn't happen again?

This happens because the laptop goes to sleep with the speakers disabled and the headphones powered on. To prevent this from happening disconnect the headphones before putting the machine to sleep.

You know... but I wonder why this is the only Lenovo netbook that has ever caused this problem for me. Granted this is the first netbook where both the mic and the headphones are in the same jack. Maybe that's why...

It's a bummer the solution has to rely on me acting different... but anyway...

The T510 is not a netbook.

The reason it is doing this is because the headphone jack senses when headphones are connected. When you put the system to sleep, disconnect the headphones, and power it back up, the system never receives the signal that the headphones have been removed since the system waits for resistance to drop (and possibly a change in voltage) before switching back to the speakers. Obviously this will not happen if the system is sleeping when they are removed.
