Re: Noise from T400s

2010-02-11, 5:12 AM

I also have the T400s with SP9600 2.53Ghz. The same annoying noise that depends on the CPU's load.

Is there an official response from Lenovo for this?

BTW, I've just had my motherboard replaced for another reason (power supply to screen died somehow), it didn't solve the problem.

I also use an X301 with U9400 1.4Ghz from work, there you can also notice such noise, but REALLY rarely.

Any remedy for the T400s problems?

Thanks,

 Cookie's Husband

What I gathered from here

http://forums.lenovo.com/t5/T400-T500-and-newer-T-series/high-pitch-noise-in-T400s/m-p/200934#M21449

is that, if you disable the C4 mode in the CPU, the buzz will go away.

Concerning how to disable it, you can google "disable c4 mode" and find various receipts.

I'd be glad to know whether it works indeed, since I'm undecided whether to buy a T400s.

Best,

D

I switched recently all T400 to use SSD drives, all sounds disappeared as system performance multiplied

Kingston 128gb SSD allows power on-bootup-desktop in under 10 seconds

About the C4 disable solution: Is this a Lenovo formal solution? What are the adverse affects? Will it cause over-heating problems? Will it shorten battery life? Will it shorten system life in general?

The local Lenovo store guys (which were great btw) couldn't help me with this problem. They said, we saw the forums like you did, we do not know of a solution.

I'm a genuine Lenovo ThinkPad’s fan. I’m sure that Lenovo has a formal say about it. It’s one of their flagship laptops isn't it? I’m using Windows 7 which should be formally supported. So,…

Can a moderator from Lenovo point to the "canonical solution" here?

Thanks,

I've been having the exact same problem except on my T410s. I've been wrangling (massive understatement, believe me) with Lenovo for about 2 months on this issue. I even forwarded the engineers the links to this particular thread and similar other ones. Their official answer, given to me by my CMT contact, is this:

"There is nothing out of the ordinary or out of the sound limits they have. Basically, they are saying there is not a problem with your machine."

They basically flat out denied the existence of the problem and the evidence for it. They didn't even bother addressing how it's possible for it to be normal when so many people are complaining about this issue. But I guess this is just Lenovo living up to its expectations again, nothing more to be done.

I just got my new T400s from Lenovo outlet, and am having the exact issue. So this seems a common issue.

Too bad I see this. I really can't bear such high pitched noise. So most likely I will return it. I hope they admit this is a defect and give me full refund.

Same problem with T500 here in Denmark.

The dealer (which is danish) was told by Lenovo that the problem could be solved by doing some changes in BIOS - didn't work.

Sent the thinkpad back right away, got my money back, and I'm not gonna touch a Lenovo product again until the problem has been fixed.

I'm now back on my good old IBM Thinkpad Z60m....

This is common to most laptops based on Intel Core2Duo - not only Lenovo. You can see this post from Dell on the matter:

http://support.dell.com/support/topics/global.aspx/support/dsn/en/document?c=us&cs=19&dl=false&l=en&s=dhs&docid=0A7D5CD2E17F5125E0401E0A55176204&doclang=en

My last Macbook did it also.

On my T400s it seems to be noticeable mostly because my fan is very quiet - hence not much background noise when I'm using the laptop.  If only they'd made the fan louder, I wouldn't hear that whine... :)

Re: Noise from T400s

Hello all,

I have a T410s notebook and had the exact same problem with this strange noise. On my machine this noice comes and goes from time to time, but unless it kept staying for two days I opened a call with lenovo.

The problem is really related to the processor as expected and the offical lenovo solution for it is disabeling the intel speed step technologie.

Of course this can not the solution for it, unless the speed step should should reduce the power consumption of the CPU and so extend the battery life.

Has anyone another solution or got the problem permaently resolved somehow other ?

Thanks,

JR
