Num lock on Thikpad T430

2013-02-21, 12:36 PM

T430 doesn't have a num lock button and num pad. I can't find num lock shortcut in the manual (with Fn and a letter key). I suppose there is no such. Have anyone found a convenient and easy way to enable it? I've tried a script described on the microsoft support site (http://support.microsoft.com/kb/314879/en), although I see numlock on notification (not the same as pressing nmlk on T420).

Hey there bienby and welcome to the forums!

I'm slightly confused on what your ultimately trying to achieve, if the T430 you are using does not come with a Numpad, then there is no need to have a numlock key. Do you have an external numpad, or something that you have connected to the machine you need this key to be enabled for?

Some clarity may help us give direction. Thank you bienby

Just noticed this...

To me the removal of a numpad is a representative behavior of preferring simplicity in appearance over some functionalities that are rarely used. A simple looking keyboard is apparently more fashionable nowadays.

I also miss the built-in NumPad. No way of typing characters with ASCII codes... unconvenient, really. I must use AutoHotKey.

I'm trying to excute a microsoft control to remove line breaks from an excel cell.  It requires a numeric pad or numbers on the alpha key.  The work around suggested by this forum has the num lock. Which also isn't on the keyboard. I know it's pretty and all for the peopel who don't deal in mass data, but otherwise it's inefficient.

Yeah--I don't have the foggiest idea why someone would remove Num Lock functionality entirely. (Disguise it, sure, I suppose, to get a clean Mac-like look--although really, if I valued Apple's priorities, I wouldn't have bought a Thinkpad in the first place. But remove it entirely?? This is supposed to be a business computer, for crying out loud.) For me, the real annoyance is losing all shortcuts for ASCII characters, and also a number of other shortcuts that rely on the num pad. This was a serious disappointment to me when I received my Thinkpad L430.

Lenovo, please give us a keyboard driver fix for this!

No NUMLOCK since no numeric keypad or numeric overlay?

Maybe try this.  It does work on some older Lenovo machines that don't show a numeric overlay and creates a phantom overlay.  Probably not, but maybe...

(In Win 7, leaving it to the reader to figure out Win 8): Start -> Accessories -> Ease of Access -> On Screen Keyboard.

Click OPTIONS, then check "Turn on numeric keypad".  The On-screen NUMLOCK will affect the physical keyboard - if this works at all.

Phantom NumLock

Thanks zoltanthegypsy! But I'm running Windows 8, and the On-Screen Keyboard there mysteriously doesn't have a Num Lock either (even though it does have the Fn key, and the Scroll Lock). Maybe Microsoft's in on the plot to eliminate the Num Lock altogether... But in that case, why do their native keyboard shortcuts to access character map symbols still involve the Number Pad?!
