Problems with upgrading from Visa Business to Vista Ultimate 64-bit

2009-06-15, 22:19 PM

I have been a loyal ThinkPad T customer for 10 years. I have just received my new T500. In my effort to save money and wanting the best I purchased a 2089-2KU with 2 GIG RAM, Vista Business and a duo core 9400 processor, and then I immediately began to upgrade this to 4 GIG's of RAM and Vista Ultimate 64-bit. This has not been fun and my upgrade is not working as I had hoped for. I am missing many drivers after down downloading all from the Lenovo, Microsoft and Intel sites.

Is there anyone in the community who can give me some constructive advice outside of spending $500 to a $1,000 on tech support, or telling me to dump the machine and buy an new one configured properly by Lenovo at the factory?

The easy way to upgrade is to use the Vista Business 64 recovery disks. As you have purchased Vista Business 32 the Microsoft license is valid also for Vista Business 64. Unfortunately Lenovo support doesn't honour the Microsoft licensing scheme and refuses to ship Vista 64 recovery disks to you if your system originally came with Vista 32.

But if you google on  thinkpad recovery disks you will find US online spare parts resellers that are willing to sell you the Vista Business 64 recovery disks you need.

T500: Vista 32, 2.8GHz, 4GB RAM, 15.4" 1680x1050, 500GB 7200rpm, ATI Radeon HD3650 + Intel 4500MHD. T42: XP, 1.7GHz, 2GB RAM, 14.1" 1024x768, 250GB PATA, ATI Radeon 7500.

Re: Problems with upgrading from Visa Business to Vista Ultimate 64-bit

If I found a Windows Vista Ultimate 64-Bit recovery disk, am I to understand that my Windows Vista Business 32-bit activation code would not work with the Ultimate 64-bit program and it would only work with the Business 64-bit code?

The first company that said they had the recovery disk did not get back to me. Tonight I will try others.

Thanks again

According to the T500 Hardware Maintenance Manual, Vista Ultimate 64 recovery disks don't exist. But my knowledge of Vista Ultimate is minimal. I have seen that Ultimate is supposed to come with both 32 and 64 bit versions. So could the 32-bit Ultimate recovery disks have an option to switch to 64-bit???? Perhaps somebody else could chime in.

Regarding the activation codes I don't know if it would work or not for Ultimate. I know it does work going from Business 32 preload and using Business 64 recovery disks -- I have done it.

T500: Vista 32, 2.8GHz, 4GB RAM, 15.4" 1680x1050, 500GB 7200rpm, ATI Radeon HD3650 + Intel 4500MHD. T42: XP, 1.7GHz, 2GB RAM, 14.1" 1024x768, 250GB PATA, ATI Radeon 7500.

Hi dickusvi!

AFAIK Vista product keys are not specific to 32 or 64 bit, but the install DVD's are.

In you situation, the simplest thing is to install Vista from your generic Ultimate 64 DVD, then install Lenovo System Update and let it rip... well actually, I wouldn't let it install everything. Install all the critical updates, and pick only the recommended updates you know you need.

Note that if you get to Vista SP2 before installing System Update, you will also need to install the System Update patch for Vista SP2.

Hope this helps.

Thank you and others for your comments.

I have found a copy of Windows Vista Business 64-bit and will order its delivery today. My intention is to use this disk with the activation code I received with my machine for Windows Vista Business 32-bit. I will then try to install my missing drivers. I will let you and all others, who are following this string, know what happenes.

Best regards,

Just so it's clear, Lenovo System Update will detect your system type, what hardware is installed, and offer to download and install the drivers for you.
