I did some additional testing, and it works great! =)

@Mark_Lenovo Well, the most important thing is, that they are finally available, 111 days after the first post on this topic.

@JameZ Thans for your support, i suppose you did everything you can on this topic.

@Lenovo in general and on this topic - I am glad that I can use my T400 again, it is a great piece of HARDware. But because of this SOFTware issues I currently don't think, that I am going to buy a Lenovo again or even recommend one. The thing is, that Lenovo was the last brand really meant for business. Dell and HP are already more the consumer Laptops sold as "business machines". But with the Business comes more than just building really great HARDware. It's all about software and support, the need to get errors fixed and updates deployed, and that has to be fast. The most important thing is communication. Communication to your customers. A lot of people write in this forum, Lenovo itself mentions that they have now over 100,000 users. These users need information, about progress, about solutions and so on. JameZ did a good job in updating us, but it seems that the users just get updates when the **bleep**storm is big enough or the mood seems to escalate. I would wish for a better information management, especially on "long road" topics like that.

I don't know, where the real issue was, if it was AMD not delievering drivers for testing, or if Lenovo missed the issue when testing for SP1. There may be more...

So long

TheFred

P.S.: I hope Lenovo doesn't go the same way as Dell as they started to be sold in supermarkets and decrease the quality to bullsh**. The buy of Medion kind of creeps me, because it is the WORST manufacturer in Germany you can have.

I think a bunch of issues coalesced together to cause the long delay.

Regardless, this particular ATI/Intel switchable variant was an esoteric setup. It probably didn't rank high on any driver team's support list, so it probably kept getting pushed in favor of fixing NVidia Optimus stuff (still prefer this method of switching).

But in anyway, lots of thanks to all of the driver teams involved in getting this (finally) fixed for us. :)

...but it was the third and major bug in the driver release history after the initial product launch of the r400/t400/t500/w500 series. the first time, i took more than a year to fix a BSOD issue, then it took twice 6 months to fix a substantial power drain issue and now an issue with arbitrary application crashes.

i keep repeating myself about this but the history indicates poor management decisions before the products were launched and bad issue management afterwards.

the trend is also not very compelling: while it's not getting worse, the support/quality-level has stabilized at a low point.

now work out how this should influence your future decisions.

Installed the new drivers, restarted, moved from Switchable-Integrated to Switchable-Discrete, installed again, restarted again. Works reasonably well. Windows 7 SP1 downloaded and installed a few seconds later. It looks like the technical part of this issue is now solved.

Now please let's deal with the business part. I think it would be reasonable to ask Lenovo to extend the warranty of all affected systems by the amount of time they were unusable due to this bug (4 months according to a post by TheFred earlier in this thread). JameZ, could you make this happen?

I'm going to roll back to the previous version as the latest driver causes me some problems:

  • atieclxx.exe prevents Aero from running
  • Switchable Graphics menu removed from the Catalyst Control Center. I don't let Power Manager run in the taskbar since it looks silly with a vertical taskbar. The art assumes that I have my taskbar in a traditional but screen space wasting horizontal arrangement.
  • Unable to switch to Intel graphics- "System cannot enable Energy-Saving Graphics: Close any 3D or video applications and disconnect external displays. Then switch Graphics processors." message on a fresh boot with nothing running and no external display.

@mcc,
It looks like you shimmed your system with an unsupported Catalyst driver. You really need to use Lenovo's driver for switching to function properly; the errors above suggest mismatched Intel and ATI drivers.

You can upgrade the ATI side (only) drivers to 11.5 after the fact though.

@ColonelONeill

I installed the official Lenovo driver that was posted here but when I have time I'll try running driver sweeper and installing it again.

Interesting - I get this message when I switch displays and have IE9 running. I turned off the hardware acceleration in IE9 and switching was fine without message.
