Zilla, thanks for that.  The only other odd thing I noted so far with new Lenovo drivers was when using Intel driver on AC running Powerpoint 2003 screenshow, when I would first start screenshow something would change in brightness of screen and then when exiting slideshow mode brightness would adjust again.  Did not see this with the Intel drivers under the older Lenovo set.  Anyone have any idea about this and thanks.

Re: R400/T400/T500/W500: display driver "amdkmdap" crashes

Hello again All,

Just a quick update here. I received 4 new T500's today (don't worry, I'm putting my XP config on them...) so I figured I'd fire one up right outta the box to see where they're at with driver revs & shipping, etc.

So here are my findings: BIOS is at 2.12 (the latest) but ATI in Device Mgr is still at the OLD 2008 version from day one. Funny given that these were supposedly built 4/22/09.

Anywho, I am very curious to throw one with the OEM Vista x32 Business image on my dock and see if it behaves any better than my current T500.

I'll keep everyone posted.

How do you know they were built 4/22? My sticker after the serial number just says 08/12 for December 2008.

Anyway Mark's post in this forum thread says the 8.56 driver wasn't shipped to the web team until 4/24 so presumably not available to manufacturing either until then. (The BIOS was available on the web 4/6.)

But there are glitches in manufacturing too. My System Update history shows that the oldest driver installed when I unpacked my T500 in December was the Ricoh 4 in 1 card driver from March 2008!

T500: Vista 32, 2.8GHz, 4GB RAM, 15.4" 1680x1050, 500GB 7200rpm, ATI Radeon HD3650 + Intel 4500MHD. T42: XP, 1.7GHz, 2GB RAM, 14.1" 1024x768, 250GB PATA, ATI Radeon 7500.

One more bug to report in the new 8.56 switchable graphics driver:

I have set Fn+F7 in Presentation Director to switch between LCD, external monitor and both as it worked in older Thinkpads.

For my Vista32 system Fn+F7 switches to my VGA external monitor with high performance (discrete graphics) mode set in the switchable graphics option in the power manager. But in energy saving (integrated graphics) mode the Fn+F7 does not work at all. (Yes I know external DVI monitors arn't supported in energy saving mode but this is a VGA monitor.)

Well this is no big deal BUT for my new Vista64 system that I am building on a second hard disk the situation is reversed. Here Fn+F7 works when in energy saving mode and doesn't work at all in high performance mode.

Unless this gets fixed in the new 8.59 driver Mark has mentioned I will for Vista64 probably stay with the modded  ATI 8.57 driver that works well also in that environment.

T500: Vista 32, 2.8GHz, 4GB RAM, 15.4" 1680x1050, 500GB 7200rpm, ATI Radeon HD3650 + Intel 4500MHD. T42: XP, 1.7GHz, 2GB RAM, 14.1" 1024x768, 250GB PATA, ATI Radeon 7500.

W500 Vista x64, I went back to switchable to test the new driver out.

When I installed the driver it BSOD'd on me the second attempt installed ok.

I have 3 scenarios:

  1. At work, docked Advanced Dock + ATI HD3450 with 3 DVI panels
  2. At home, docked Advanced mini to 32" LCD
  3. Mobile, using laptop display + random VGA monitor/projector.

Problems:

  • Scenario 1, switchable it appears to use resources stopping the card in the advanced dock from working in Vista.
  • Scenario 1/2, switchable boots using the integrated display controller which means DVI output doesn't work which means I can't login.  If I login in blind then once I log in it will flick over to discrete and my DVI monitor will come up.

I have reverted back to my functional setup of running the Intel drivers and ATI mod drivers and manually selecting the mode I want in the BIOS/

i.e.. if I am traveling then I will go into the BIOS and manually change display config to integrated, when I return just flick it back to discrete in the BIOS.

I still have a bug with Advanced dock and have to enter the BIOS and switch between switchable->discrete each time I dock hopefully lenovo will release a new BIOS rev to fix this.

The main reasons I chose the W500 was for battery life when mobile, I am glad I have the ability to extend battery life albeit having to change BIOS settings maybe one day switchable will work for me.

I would like to state running the mod ATI I never have any crashing or issues, it is solid.

So does this mean that if I go and get a T500 with Vista 64 (which I'd planned to do at the end of the month) I'm going to have trouble running switchable graphics? I'll be using switchable graphics on the road and at home my setup is DVI monitor/Advanced Mini-Dock.

Should I wait for the next model of Thinkpads?

Other people on this thread may be of a different mind than me, but given how long this issue has been ongoing and given the way Lenovo has handled it, I would put off getting a new Thinkpad until Lenovo as a company gets its act together in terms of support, QA, and customer relations.

Just to give you some perspective, I got my T500 to replace a 4-5 year old IBM T42 that was running out of harddrive space, had almost no battery capacity left and had a fan that was starting to fail.  Despite its problems, I still find myself occassionally going back to the T42 because it's simply a better built, more reliable machine.

I notice Lenovo on May 3 stated:  This new release resolves the BSOD problem, and has no known limitations. :smileyvery-happy:

Another thing that irks me is the general fact that even if I change BIOS to discrete only, I still get stupid various video issues. Whether it's the screens flashing after I change PC's on the KVM, or my monitor orientations messed up (and not allowing me to change), etc. I have been very close to going back to my T61 15" wide at work (6460-66U.) That model had a 128MB NVIDIA Quadro card which apparently was all I needed!! (because it worked! :smileyvery-happy:)

My company orders machines on bid pricing with Lenovo, so typically each model cycle I am given a choice of what machines are eligible for special pricing. That being said, I chose the 2056-4SU T500, which looked really nice on paper. I thought to myself "wow, switching video cards would be great!" ...in addition to the beefy CPU and 4GB RAM, etc.

I still really miffs me that evidently they didnt test a docking setup like mine (and I'm sure a zillion other folks also...)

It is not rocket science to have a laptop on a dock with its lid closed, and 2 external LCD panels attached to the dock. I did it with my T41/42/43/60 and 61 with no baloney!

Why oh Why will it work right with this thing?!?!

Enough from me this morning. Gotta "try" to get some work done on this thing today.
