Re: R400/T400/T500/W500: display driver "amdkmdap" crashes

2009-08-08, 13:00 PM

In my experience, over at least twelve calls associated with my new T400, Lenovo tech support's response to any software problem is "reload Vista".  It's worth digging in message boards to find more intelligent solutions.

I have the same problem with "amdkmdap" crashes on a new install of Google Earth....still looking for a solution.

Any news on the new driver?

Anyways, I got Windows 7 RTM (the version that'll ship to retail in october) today through msdn, so I'll give that an install and see how it works out.  Anything I should be watching out for?

Hello Andy, I also got the RTM through MSDN at my office and I have a spare hdd for my laptop and have been itching to install it.

After some Googling, I did see a few things that look like they may not work but I'm willing to give it a go anyways. Vista is just beating me slowly each day, and I can't wait until Lenovo gets the driver set ready for everything.

I hope it will be promising as I have installed the 64 bit RTM on a ThinkCentre M57 with no probs whatsoever.

Let us know how you fare.

Thanks in advance,

Brian G.

So far so good with Windows 7.  The only major incompatibility that I've run into is that the switchable graphics don't seem to work and that the discrete graphics need a driver upgrade.  Also, if you leave switchable graphics set in bios and update the discrete graphics driver, the screen goes completely black and nonfunctional.

Given that the switchable graphics have never really worked (thanks Lenovo!), it's not a bad tradeoff.

Thanks for the update. I did read that switchable wasn't yet working on 7. The only time it works for me is if i'm undocked with just the laptop screen. Then it works great.

So basically just set BIOS for discrete only before doing the install of 7.

Cool, perhaps I will be giving this a try.

I have the same problem.

I use the R400, and trust me it is a pain in the ***.  I noticed that when playing high flash or HD that the driver fails, but on normal definition it doesn't. I also noticed that the problem was caused by graphics hardware. But I don't know what to do. Again please help me :smileyindifferent:

This is starting to get on my nerves. I want this fixed ASAP. By the way my computer is only one year old. It's kind of nonsense for a computer to be broken at that young of an age.

Trust me I'm truly dissapointed in Lenovo.

Hi Mark,

How about some attention and love for us?

Win 7 has been released. But there is no sign of a driver. And for Vista, the promised driver has not been released. How much whining do we have to do that it costs you less to make us happy? :smileyhappy:

But Izmi, we're so close to the 1 year anniversary of MIGR-70490.  If they fixed the problem now it would spoil the fun.
