Random sleeps on T580 w/ Ultra Docking Station - Intel Thermal Framework issue

2018-06-02, 15:50 PM

I'm experiencing an issue with intermittent shutdowns on my new T580 (20L9) with the Ultra Docking Station (40AJ). The issue appears to derive from the Intel Dynamic Platform and Thermal Framework driver, as I typically see a corresponding error (DPTF Event ID 256 - Unhandled Exception) in Event Viewer, the details for which I'm including below. I'm running Windows 10 x64 1803 (Build 17134.81). It appears that certain CPU/GPU-intensive tasks will tip the driver to immediately put the system in sleep mode, so not technically a full system shutdown. Most recently, I attempted to restore a browser session in Chrome after an OS restart, opening a number of browser windows w/ multiple tabs each, which triggered the issue. Over the course of my daily use, it will happen anywhere from one to five times, and it's extremely annoying.

I have not experienced the issue with the system undocked, however, my computer is docked about 90% of the time I'm using the machine, and I did recently update to Win 10 1803, which could be part of the problem (?) I am using **all** of the latest drivers available on Lenovo's site, including that for the Intel Dynamic Platform and Thermal Framework, version 8.3.10207.5567 as of the time of this post. I'm also running the latest BIOS, i.e. 1.10.

I'm not sure if there's a BIOS setting available that could help with the issue or some power management setting? I'm including the full Event Viewer details below. Please advise.

Latest BIOS for T580 and P52s fixes this issue:  https://pcsupport.lenovo.com/us/en/downloads/ds502394

Download and run the BIOS udpate utility.  After it's finished, reboot and press F1 to check the BIOS version.  You are looking for this version or later:

1.15  (N27ET29W)

Did you ever get this resolved?  I have a user with the exact same symptoms, but we haven't done a lot of testing off the dock yet.  We've updated to the latest Intel Thermal Framework drivers from Lenovo (Just came out on 6/8) but that didn't help.  Updated to the latest drivers from Intel, no better.  Tried dock firmware, nothing.

Lenovo came out and replaced the system board - no better.  We push a clean corporate image to ALL machines, include a few hundred Thinkpads we have out there, and this is the only one exhibiting this behavior (Also the only T580 we have out there so far, everything else is T480.)  Lenovo wants their image back on it before we do anything else, which is tough because the user is a few hundred miles away.

Thank you for the response, DiPersiaTech- perhaps someone from Lenovo will contribute here? That's particularly interesting that you even had the system board replaced and this issue persists. I also noticed the Thermal Framework drivers from 6/8, and tried to update, but strangely they're the same version as before, i.e. 8.3.10208.5644, so the installer reported the most up to date drivers were already present in the system.

What's odd about this issue, is that I only *sometimes* receive the Intel Thermal Framework error in the system log- it happened to me yesterday, and I noticed a few Kernal-Power related events, one of which simply stated "The System is entering sleep. Sleep Reason: Application API" (Event ID: 42). Does your system in question have the discrete nVidia MX150 card? I'm suspecting it has something to do with heating related to the graphics card, based on certain events that seem to trigger the shutdowns (opening Illustrator caused it the other day, for instance.)

Would really appreciate some feedback from a Lenovo rep- are you investigating this issue? This should not be happening on a brand new $2k+ system.

Agreed on the event logs only sometimes showing the Intel Thermal errors.  I'm wondering if the update to the 8.4 drivers directly from Intel got rid of the "error" as I've not seen them in the event log since.

Our machine does not have the NVidia card.  It's using the built-in Intel 620 graphics.

I reached out to the Lenovo rep we opened the case with, but no response yet.  I'm guessing he'll tell me the same thing - rebuild it with the Lenovo image on it, which will probably be a big fat waste of time.

Hm, interesting it's also happening on a system with only integrated graphics- did you say this is happening when the system is un-docked as well? I haven't yet experienced it while not on the dock, but I haven't had the system very long and use it 90% of the time docked with my external monitor. I'll reach out to Lenovo as well to open up another case- rebuilding with the Lenovo image sounds like it would indeed be a waste of time. I wonder if it's something that needs to be addressed in a BIOS update (?)

I haven't been able to get the user to keep it out of the dock for more than one reboot unfortunately.  Would really like him to do some testing out of the dock, but he has dual monitors.

Feel free to reference our open case with Lenovo, 406D37N.

Ok, thanks very much for the info- I will definitely reference your case number. I suspect once more of these units are in the wild, it will become necessary for Lenovo to address this issue. One other question- does your user have the Ultra Docking Station (40AJ)? Perhaps it's a firmware issue related to the dock (?)

We do have the ultradock and did all of the firmware/updates listed for it (There's about six of them, but very cobbled together - no idea if they worked, some fail, etc.)

User said he did do some more testing off the dock today and it's also sleeping off the dock.
