Re: Intermittent shutdowns on T580 w/ Ultra Docking Station - Intel Thermal Framework issue

Meant to ask - are you using the Lenovo OEM Windows image that came on the machine?

I am not using the OEM Windows image- I did a clean Win10 install, using the latest build w/ all the latest drivers from Lenovo's site.

Re: Random sleeps on T580 w/ Ultra Docking Station - Intel Thermal Framework issue

2018-06-13, 18:12 PM

I had this problem on my own T580 - and I never use a dock.  The system randomly went into sleep mode, while I was actively using it.

From event viewer logs, I suspected the Intel Dynamic Platform and Framework driver.  On June 7, I updated it to version 8.3.10208.5644, by right-clicking on the device in Device Manager and choosing the option about Update driver.  I have not had the problem since.  But the problem happens so intermittently, I can't be sure it's really solved.  I would go for weeks without having this problem, then I would have it several times in a day, and then no problem for weeks, etc.

Can you guys please check the version of this file?  C:\WINDOWS\System32\Intel\DPTF\esif_uf.exe

I'm going to try to find someone at Intel who can explain the strange event viewer logs that you mentioned.

I modified the thread title to say "random sleeps" rather than "intermittent shutdowns".

Thanks very much for your reply, someotherguy; it's reassuring to know that others are experiencing the issue as well, at least. I checked the version of that file you mentioned, and it is indeed 8.3.10208.5644 (see attached.) As I mentioned to DiPersiaTech, I attempted to install that "updated" version of the Intel driver on June 7, but the installer notified me that I already had the latest version (?) As you mentioned, I'm also experiencing it very intermittently, with no seeming regular pattern that I can deduce. I'll be very curious to hear if Intel has any ideas!

I did try the version you mentioned, then also found a newer version in the Windows Update catalog (Not Intel's site like I originally thought.)  It was a cab that I couldn't get to install no matter what, so I manually updated the files in device manager.  The machine in question I'm having issues with is 8.4.11000.6436.

T580, 512GB SSD, 32GB RAM, non-touch 1080p LCD, USB-C 65W charger, NO dock. 20L9CTO1WW

Under high instantaneous load (refresh 10 tabs in firefox in quick succession) thinkpad goes to sleep immediately. So far it happens only when plugged in. Extremely annoying!

Both batteries show as "not charging" when plugged in. Power profile set to disable sleep when plugged in.

I had to move the slider to "Better performace" to be able to do any work, if set to Max, notebook goes to sleep almost immediately.

Original Lenovo Win10 Pro image, updated everything to latest and installed dev tools.

Ran prime95 for an hour, doesn't go to sleep.

Relevant event log entries below, @lenovo, what is going on?

Have you found a way to consistenly reproduce it?
I'm still trying to get in touch with someone at Intel who can help explain the event log entry.

Yes, set the performance slider to maximum, charger plugged in.

Option 1: Have about 10 tabs with JIRA issues open, refresh all of them (click, F5, click, F5, ...) in quick succession.

Option 2: just after login, open 2 or 3 instances of Visual Studio 2017 quickly.

There's source code for the module in question on github (https://github.com/intel/dptf/blob/master/ESIF/Products/ESIF_UF/Sources/esif_uf_action_system.c) but it only responds to something.
