Re: Random sleeps on T580 w/ Ultra Docking Station - Intel Thermal Framework issue

Thanks for the feedback @yurikus, we seem to be experiencing the same issue. Have you by chance updated to the latest BIOS? Lenovo pushed 1.12 on 13 June, although I don't see any sleep/power related items mentioned in the list of fixes. Your experience of the issue under "high instantaneous load" also mirrors my experience (opening many browser tabs at once, Adobe Photoshop/Illustrator CPU-intensive tasks, etc.)

Not sure which bios version I'm running. Lenovo system update doesn't offer anything when I checked this morning

I would do a manual check- those update tools never seem to be up to date.

Agreed - seems they update the tool much slower than the website.  On your machine, run msinfo32.  Can run it from the start/run, search or command prompt.  Looks for the BIOS Version/Date in there on the system summary tab.

I'm running 1.10 from 3/15/18

Updated to 1.12 (shows 5/31/18)  then upon reboot and login, immediately ran msinfo32 and .... it went to sleep

With the new BIOS it goes to sleep immediately after login, FFS ....
The only way to counteract this now is to login with power brick disconnected.

I'm on BIOS 1.12 and Intel DPTF driver 8.3.10208.5644, but I can't reproduce the problem as you say.

I'm on the Balanced power plan and the power slider is set to best performance.  I boot on AC power, log into Windows, and then immediately start 2 instances of Visual Studio 2017.  I have also loaded 10 different JIRA bugs in my chrome browser, and refresh all of them as fast as I can.  The machine stays up.

I have seen this unexpected sleep problem in the past, but not since June 7 when I updated the Intel DPTF driver.

Can you please try disabling the "Intel(R) Dynamic Platform and Thermal Framework service" in services.msc to see if the problem still happens?

@someotherguy, I asked my user to disable the Intel service. We'll see. . .

Try setting your machine to max power and see if you can replicate instead of being on balanced power.

Disabled DPTF service, rebooted, waited 5 minutes for everything to go idle, set the slider to max perf, clicked on the VS2017 icon 5 times -- thinkpad went to sleep.

DPTF Driver 8.3.10208.5644

UPDATE: realized one more thing - Win10 self-updated to 1803 17134.112 some time ago

As another experiment, can you please leave the DPTF service disabled and uninstall all of the DPTF-related devices in Device Manager -> System devices?  Make sure to check the box about "delete the driver software for this device" (if prompted).

hmm, interesting. Uninstalled all DPTF Participants and Manager devices, restarted, set perf slider to max, ran usual tests and so far it seems to work.

To clarify, upon reboot Windows reinstalled all DPTF devices, but with a driver version 8.3.10207.5567
