hmm, interesting. Uninstalled all DPTF Participants and Manager devices, restarted, set perf slider to max, ran usual tests and so far it seems to work.

To clarify, upon reboot Windows reinstalled all DPTF devices, but with a driver version 8.3.10207.5567

Can you please try installing the latest driver (8.3.10208.5644) and see if the problem stays gone?  Also, re-enable the service that you disabled previously.  I think it will take a day or two of use to feel confident whether the problem is really gone or not.

Frankly I'm hesitant .. I'll probably try that on Friday. Need to get some work done.

Re: Random sleeps on T580 w/ Ultra Docking Station - Intel Thermal Framework issue

I have my user testing the machine with the devices removed from device manager.  Hoping this makes the machine more stable during run-time.  He doesn't have it going to sleep much while in use, but always at boot.

I read online there may be a setting in the BIOS to disable DPTF. . .  I don't have a machine here to check on, but someone may want to look in to that and see if it helps.

ThinkPad does not have any BIOS setting to disable DPTF.

Re: Random sleeps on T580 w/ Ultra Docking Station - Intel Thermal Framework issue

This was happening to me consistently all morning. The only difference between my situation and other reports here, is that I recived a BSoD with error code MEMORY_MANAGEMENT, but a memory diagnostic found no errors. Not sure if that was related or not.

I took the following steps and (knock on wood) have been running several CPU intensive tasks, at maximum performanc setting, while plugged in, WITHOUT getting a sleep/shutdown:

  1. I first updated the Intel Dynamic Platform and Thermal Framework Manager (DPTF) in Device Manager via right click, update driver. This did not change anything.
  2. After rebooting, while unplugged, I removed all Intel DPTF devices via device manager right click, uninstall device. I also uninstalled anything that sounded related, like all "generic participant" entries, the processor participant, the management engine and the power engine plug-in. When given the option, I selected "delete driver" checkbox on the unistall dialog.
  3. I rebooted.

I've been running OpenSCAD renders, videoes, etc. for a while now without a shutdown. Previously it was shutting down constantly. If I continue to experience issues I will post back here, but I wanted to post the process since it was similar to the user above who hasn't replied in a while. Hopefully this is a "fix".

Thanks for your feedback @ncsucodemonkey. To provide a follow-up on my end- while it may be a coincidence or due to some combination of other, unkown factors, ever since I upgraded my BIOS to the latest 1.12, I've only experienced the problem once (also, *knock on wood*). Curious if others who have experienced this issue have found any other, more definitive solutions?

Re: Random sleeps on T580 w/ Ultra Docking Station - Intel Thermal Framework issue

2018-07-04, 6:13 AM

I think that my success before was luck. I experienced another random shutdown while on AC power this evening. After that shutdown, I downloaded a CPU stress test (I used AIDA64 but I'm sure anything would work) and was able to consistently shut the machine down. The machine appeared to experience very high temps and my suspicion is that that Intel software was trying to avoid damage. I turned back to Google, and found another forum thread with problems similar to ours: https://www.dell.com/community/XPS/Dell-XPS-15-9560-Shuts-down-randomly/td-p/5712086/page/5

I followed the advice there, rolling the management drivers back to 8.2.11000.2996 by downloading from MSDN https://www.catalog.update.microsoft.com/Search.aspx?q=Intel(R)+Dynamic+Platform+and+Thermal+Framework+Manager+10

I ran the stress test again, and got a shutdown. So I updated the BIOS.

After the BIOS update, I was able to run the stress test for several minutes. Thinking I was safe, I updated the intel drivers to the latest. After rebooting, a stress test immediately slept the machine, again with high temps.

So I rolled the intel management driver back to the above version again, rebooted and was again able to run a stress test. Temps look well within normal/controlled range, and the fan is running less than it has in weeks. I may try updating the driver to a more recent version, since it looks like the failing 8.3 version is fairly recent.

I'll post again if I encounter more issues or if something else goes wrong.

I tried running the windows 10 update 1803 and upgrading the DTPF drivers to version 8.4.11000.6436 (which I believe is the latest), but I still experienced problems running stress tests. The 8.2 version I mentioned above is the only one I've found that's stable, though there may be a stable version between it and 8.3.

Hi, could you possibly explain the driver rollback process.  I am not getting the option to roll back as the rollback option is dithered out.  I was able to download the 8.2 cab but am not seeing how to install this version.  Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks
