Re: Random sleeps on T580 w/ Ultra Docking Station - Intel Thermal Framework issue

2018-07-06, 16:43 PM

Whenever I remove the device I get a check box on the confirmation dialog that asks me if I want to delete the driver. I'm able to check that box. If you're not, then I'm not sure what to do.

To install the driver, you first unzip the CAB (I use 7-Zip to unzip it) and then update/install the driver from the right-click menu on device manager. There's a way to tell it that you have the driver downloaded locally, so you click that and navigate to wherever you expanded the CAB. Windows will search that directory and find the matching driver.

Sorry if that's not helpful. I'm at work and not infront of my machine so I'm not sure of the exact wording on all the dialogs.

I don't think I am because I hacked my DPTF driver to an ancient version. But I can reproduce it reliably if I update that driver. What logs do you require?

ncsucodemonkey,

We have a trial BIOS that should fix this problem.  Would you please try it?

https://1drv.ms/u/s!ApXWjQB7_a1bhc1tCw5etNT3-ssXsw

How to install it:
1. Download and extract the zip
2. From the extracted folder, double-click on WinUpTp.exe
3. Follow the on-screen instructions, the system will reboot at the end
4. After rebooting to Windows, reboot again, and then press F1 to enter BIOS setup
5. On the main screen, make sure UEFI BIOS version is reported as N27E27A1 (1.13)
      • A1 is how you know the trial BIOS is installed
6. In BIOS setup, press F9 to load Setup Defaults, and then press F10 to Save and Exit
      • This is the key step to make the new BIOS policy take effect
7. Run with this trial BIOS for a while, and let us know if the problem is fixed or not

This is great news- thank you for posting the updated BIOS. Will be very curious to see if this helps for those still experiencing the issue.

I can try this out soon.

One thing I don't think I ever mentioned: I'm not using the dock in the title. I'm just plugged into AC power. Will the BIOS update still be good/safe for my case?

This issue actually has nothing to do with dock.  The trial BIOS is supposed to disable the DTPF policy that is making the system enter sleep mode unexpectedly.  That's what I need your help to confirm.  Remember that you have to update the BIOS and load default settings in BIOS setup as I described in the steps 1-7 previously.

My user that is having this problem installed the test BIOS this afternoon.  No sleep on boot-up/login as he has experienced almost 100% of the time.  He's leaving the thermal devices loaded to see how it performs.  Also mentioned he feels the machine is faster, but that it may be his imagination.  Wonder if the thermal stuff in the BIOS was limiting the CPU. . .

All,

Any more feedback on the trial BIOS I provided on July 10?  Do we feel comfortable that the trial BIOS fixes the issue?  Thanks so much for your help with this.

No news yet from my user (Which means good news to me.) I have a tickler on my calendar to reach out to him next Wednesday as that will be a week that he's been on it. I'll report back then.

Hi, I have been running the bios since uploaded on a T580 and Ultra Dock with 3 external monitors.  Everything has been running great with no random sleeps that I was experiencing before.
