Re: Random sleeps on T580 w/ Ultra Docking Station - Intel Thermal Framework issue

I simply did it from System Update and so far no random sleeps in 2 days. Didn't need to reset anything ahead of time, let the installer do everything for you.

I see that the new bios is out.  Using Lenovo System update, or just installing from a direct link to the bios from the support page -- do we still need to reset bios to default?

No, that was just a special step for the test BIOS.  Now that formal BIOS is released on the support website, this step is not needed.

Almost 1 week of running the new BIOS update with no issues dropping into random sleep - looking positive!

Re: Random sleeps on T580 w/ Ultra Docking Station - Intel Thermal Framework issue

Hi,

I have the same problem on a P52s. How do I run the Lenovo System Update?

I downloaded and ran this installer from:

https://support.lenovo.com/us/en/downloads/ds012808

Is that the correct one?

After running the installer and rebooting my machine, I hit F1 to check the BIOS version. It Says N27ET24W (1.10) with date of 3-15-18. Which seems to be quite old.

Is there any way to confirm if I have the latest BIOS with this fix?

Also, can someone point me to the release notes that specifically state this issue is fixed?

Latest BIOS for T580 and P52s fixes this issue:  https://pcsupport.lenovo.com/us/en/downloads/ds502394

Download and run the BIOS udpate utility.  After it's finished, reboot and press F1 to check the BIOS version.  You are looking for this version or later:

1.15  (N27ET29W)

This helped me too

Thanks. I figured out my issue. The Lenovo System Update I ran through just installed the program on my PC. I had to run the program separately (duh).

I allowed the System Update to download and install all updates including the 1.15 BIOS fix. This took aobut 30 minutes. I was worried my PC was going to go to sleep during the middle of the udpate. Luckily it didn't.

I was able to confirm the BIOS was updated succesfully via this DOS command:

>wmic bios get smbiosbiosversion
SMBIOSBIOSVersion
N27ET29W (1.15 )

Hoping this BIOS update fixes my issue with random sleeps. Only time will tell...

Hello,

We have had multiple users with this exact same issue. As a temporary work around we have limited the CPU Frequency to lower the Thremal shock on the system. To do so you can modify the existing power plan in the control panel, go to "change advanced power settings" and set the maximum processor frequency under processor power management. We have had quite a bit of luck with 2700 MHz (2.7 GHz). On some systems this option is hiden so you may need to modify the registry to show this option. To do so navigate to the folowing registry HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Power\PowerSettings\54533251-82be-4824-96c1-47b60b740d00\75b0ae3f-bce0-45a7-8c89-c9611c25e100, and change the attributes property from 1 or 0 to 2. Hope this helps anyone with this issue! Its definily a work around but it is working for us!

Re: Random sleeps on T580 w/ Ultra Docking Station - Intel Thermal Framework issue

I've been running a couple of days with the new BIOS and so far no more random sleeps.

However, now I'm facing a new problem. Similar to the random sleeps, randomly all my screens will go black momentarily and then come back. I have three monitors hooked up to the Thinkpad Thunderbolt 3 dock.

This brief blackout will happen even as I'm activly typing. Happens a couple times a day like the sleeps did. Not as annoying as the sleeps since those require the user to push the power button. However, annoying nonetheless and disruptive.

So in conclusion the BIOS fixed one issue but created another. When can we get a fix for the random black screens?

I've noticed a similar issue. Mine blinks black when it's not plugged in but what I've noticed is the charging icon activating and deactivating on the taskbar whenever it happens. The screen going black is the system changing refresh rates of the displays intermittently due to a power-saving feature when not plugged in so somehow they bugged the thunderbolt port so that it doesn't always properly recognize the presence of a charging cable. I'm hoping it's fixable with another update. It should be.
