Re: [T440p] fan terrible noisy

I thought that too, but actually it makes sense, because not all machines have the problem. Either Lenovo has more than one supplier or the fan series has a big manufacturing tolerance. In that case I would call the mechanic again and again or perhaps ask him to bring enough fans to chose from.

I wonder if it is so financially smart by Lenovo to buy cheap parts and then spend money on repairs.

But others do the same. Today my 2nd Dell power supply died.

Yes, it's a T430 and I had the exact same noise issue. They had my fan and my motherboard replaced - no change. Then they replaced my fan again to a Toshiba (FRU 04W3267) and it's just fine. It produces only the normal fan noise, not the whining. The problem is, I don't know if my previous fan was a Toshiba also or something else. But I must think it was. That sound has nothing to do with the controlling, it really sounded like bad manufacturer. Resonating, or the fan blades keep hitting something.

So if this is the case then Lenovo should issue a bulletin on this matter, letting the technicians know that if someone calls in with the problem the technician should bring several fans to try. Then Lenovo need to keep track of which fan replacements work and which don't.

Why still no word from Lenovo on this?

When the technician calls me to make an appointment I will tell him to bring several fans. I will take note of all FRU numbers and report back.

FRU 04W3267 is the fan plus heatpipe assemby and is listed for about USD $80. Kind of expensive way of repairinf if only the fan itself is the problem. If this is really a Toshiba, then the blame goes to them for for bad QA.

Well, $80 is the retail price. I found this site: https://www.zauba.com/import-04w3267-hs-code.html

It lists imports to India and show INR 449 per unit, which is $7.15. That seems to be the suppliers's price. I don't know if this is the same composite with heatpipe, but I think so.

Fortunately, mine was repaired under warranty, so I didn't care a thing of the prices. Please note that this is the current fan that has a normal fan noise. What I don't know is if the previous was also a Toshiba or not. That's why I'm curious because that horrible rattling sound was the same I heard.

Mine came today. It also has a buzzing sound. Not as loud as I was expexting, but very audible. It's definitely the fan and I even think it is by design. If you move the fan blades with your fingers you can feel how it clicks into position at each 20 degrees or so. The heatpipe of mine has a black coating whereas the Toshiba one has shiny copper, at least if the images are right that I could google.

I've uploaded a sample of the current Toshiba fan in my T430. Don't expect anything special, it was recorded with a mobile phone... The point is, you can hear the totally different type of sound - a normal winding noise, no rattling or whining. I manually throttled up on tpfancontrol from 0 to 7 (~5100 rpm ath the end) to have a comparison.

Could you perhaps check if yours has a shiny copper heatpiope or a black one like mine? You only have to open the backplate. it's eay. It has only 2 screws and slides out with some little pushing (not lifting).

The replaced fan of my T440p I kept is a toshiba, too. The faceside of the fan is coated black. The back side is copper only (with spatters of coat).
