Replace 16 GB m.2 with a 256 GB, or keep it and add the 256 GB

2015-06-06, 7:46 AM

My T450s has the 16 GB m.2, and another currently empty m.2 slot. I bought a 256 GB 42mm m.2. I'm wondering, what's best practice. Should I leave the 16 GB in its slot and add the 256 GB to the other slot, or, remove the 16 GB and put the 256 GB in its place, leaving the currently emty slot still empty?

I know the 16 GB is a cache for the 500 GB HDD that is currently in, and that's good. But, I'm also shopping for a 512 GB SSD to replace that with. At that point, the 16 GB m.2 seems unnecessary, and maybe could be repurposed as a RAM disk (uninstalling the cache software that's currently using it)

So unless someone tells me it'd be best to do something different... I think that's I want to do is as mentioned, replace the HDD with a SSD, and replace the 16 with the 256. I'd still like to use the 16 GB in some useful fashion if possible though, but with the changes, it may be a moot point.

Not germane to the topic, but  I'm also adding an 8 GB DIMM while I'm in there.

Please advise if anyone knows what I've suggested is a good idea or not and if not, why.

Thanks
