Replacement battery for ThinkPad T420

2013-08-25, 4:37 AM

Hi all,

I recently bought a re-furbished T420 that has a 6 cell "55+" 57Wh battery.

The battery life seems ordinary, first off it will say 100% - 5 hours, 30 mins later it says 80% - 3 hours and so on until after maybe 2-3 hours it's dead, all on a balanced power plan.

I think it obviously needs a new battery, and the official LENOVO shop rep (who came on via the pop-up) told me my options are;

1) 6 cell "70+" 57Wh (OA36302) for AUD $113.

2) 9 cell "70++" 94Wh (OA36303) for AUD $156  &

3) 9 cell slice "28++" 94Wh (OA36304) for AUD $168.

I want to get a decent one and prefer genuine. Which would be best?

Also, what do the "70+", "70++" & "28++" ratings mean?

70+ and 70++ are the new battery, the +/++ means 6 cells and 9 cells, probably + equals extra.

Your current battery is the 55+, it also had the 55++, which is a 9 cells version.

55 and 70 battery have the same dimension, but the 70 battery uses an internal authentication chip that tells the laptop that it is a genuine Lenovo item. For you this doesn't matter, but if you ever intend to upgrade to the T430, then you would need to use the 70 battery series.

28 series battery is an external slice battery that can be attached to the bottom of your laptop for extra run time (as it works inconjunction with the internal battery (55 or 70). There are two varieties of the 28 series, the 28+ (6 cells) and 28++ (9 cells).

If you get the 28++, this means you can still use your old 55+ until it breaks.

Also, try to reset the battery meter in your T420 using the ThinkVantage Power Manager's battery maintenance utility. This should make the battery life to read correctly.

Thanks very much for the reply.

Is it worth getting the 28++ "slice" if the existing 55 battery is ordinary, and might also need replacement soon?

(The slice 28++ being only $12 more than the 9 cell 70++ does make it attractive though)

this is one reason why i ask you to do a battery reset, if the battery is about to fail it should be detected by the power manager system (status would change from green to red).

Also, what is the current full charge capacity and what is the design capacity?

Finally, if your internal battery still has some life in it, then i would recommend you that get the slice battery, this means you can still get some use out of the existing battery before they fail. But that is my personal opinion, it really depends on your usage scenario.

I did a battery gauge reset and got the following;

Current Full Charge Capacity: 55.36 Wh

Design Capacity: 56.16 Wh

I had to download Power Manager as I had no "Lenovo ThinkVantage Tools" in my Start➙ All Programs list

As an aside, is my blue ThinkVantage button meant to do anything? It doesn't seem to.

that looks alright in terms of power capacity of the battery.

The blue ThinkVantage button will only work when you have the Lenovo set of tools installed. It is meant to be a button access to the recovery partition, which you don't have since your machine probably didn't came with the originally shipped windows OS.

Download Thinkvantage System Update, it will download all the necessary drivers and software you need.

What is the battery life you get with the maximum battery life mode in the ThinkVantage Power Manager?

Also what sort of programs you run on the laptop when you are quoting your battery life?

Based upon the remaining charge capacity, the battery appears almost new.  How long does it last now that you have done the battery reset and is the time remaining indicator acurate?  3 hours from a full function thinkpad like the 420 sounds about right.

I think the battery seems better after the reset and the time remaining also seems accurate so I'm happy to leave it at that.

If I need a new battery at some stage I'll go the slice given that my existing battery seems OK.

Thanks for the replies.

Yes, and as a general rule Lenovo designs all docks as well as dock batteries to accommodate not only 6-cell but 9-cell batteries. I don't know of any exceptions to this rule in their recent laptop designs.

Here you can see some clear pics. with a 9-cell battery and 28++ slice/dock battery  attached which this gentleman posted: http://www.jessebandersen.com/2013/04/lenovo-thinkpad-w530-thinkpad-battery.html

Detailed specs. from the Lenovo website: http://support.lenovo.com/us/en/documents/pd024286

Batteries and Battery Charger - Reference Guide for future reference: http://support.lenovo.com/us/en/documents/pd012165

28++ slice/dock battery adds about 1.4 lbs more weight to the laptop, props the laptop up to a slightly different angle, and it's a 9-cell, so basically doubles run-time assuming your 55++ (9-cell) still has about 94wh capacity.
