SATA vs. SATA-II hard drives for T400

2008-11-05, 23:39 PM

Hello all,

I've just purchased a T400 (my 4th Thinkpad) and I'm planning to swap out the hard drive with a newer one.  I have two quick questions:

1. Can the T400 accomodate SATA-II hard drives internally?  Will a SATA-II HDD perform better?

2. I'm getting an Ultrabay Slim SATA HDD Adapter II (#43R198). Will a SATA-II hard drive perform better than a SATA hard drive, when used in the Ultrabay?

I hope one of you Thinkpad gurus can shed some light on this... I've been unable to find any reliable information on the forums / web so far.

Thanks!

As long as it physically fits, yes.

The answer is no in both cases.  There are no single (mechanical) hard drives on the market at present which can use the full capacity of any SATA interface, so for single hard drives using either a SATA or SATA II interface makes no difference to performance.
