Safe to use T440 without internal battery?

2020-09-16, 11:45 AM

The internal battery of my T440 laptop is completely dead. I ran a windows battery status check and it came back with code -1mWh design/full charge capacity. Whereas the external battery has 23,480 mWh/13210mWh design and full charge capacity. The battery icon displays "0% available, plugged in" and doesn't charge the second battery (I guess because it can't charge battery 1?)

Would it be safe to completely remove the internal battery and use the laptop only with the external battery present?

Thanks!

Yes, but do remove it.  No internal battery is much better than bad battery.  I am assuming you have a working external battery.

Thanks for your advice! I removed the internal battery and used the computer all day without any issues. What's weird is that the external battery doesn't charge when I plug it in. I guess I'll have to use the computer on AC power only now.

Not sure what happened but the computer worked perfectly 2 days ago.. then all of the sudden battery 1 died, battery 2 doesn't charge and the computer slowed down a lot. Any idea as to what may have happened?

I've encountered a similar scenario.  Discovering a T450 with no internal battery, only an external one.  I'm guessing the external one is bad since it won't power on without being plugged in to A/C.  I wonder if it's possible the internal connector is somehow disconnected from the system board? I've not reopened it yet to look closer.  Prior to having the screen repaired (not by me) the battery was working fine.

Regarding speed, I'm curious.  Is it like REAL slow, as in unbearable?  If so, bring up task manager, switch to the performance tab, then note what Speed you see there.  Perhaps 0.78 Ghz or similar?

Yes that's exactly it! I'm seeing 0.79GHz - any idea as to why? It's not unbearable, but close to it. I was used to the computer flying through whatever I was doing, whereas now even opening up Youtube takes a long time.

Regarding your T450 - yeah that sounds odd! The screen repair definitely shouldn't have impacted the external battery.

Ok then, this should fix it - credit to the original site...

https://www.wintips.org/fix-cpu-not-running-at-full-speed-in-windows-10/

Several solutions offered there. This is the one that immediately fixed it for me.

Method 4. Disable the 'intelppm" service from Registry

Now that I think about that, I wonder if that's why my battery is not detected :)

Ironically, installing the Lenovo driver...

Lenovo Power Management Driver for Windows 10, 8.1, 8, 7 (32-bit, 64-bit) - Laptops

Reverted that tweak and also put me back at 0.78Ghz.  So I had to make that registry change again.  I haven't tried to study in detail what it all means and the purpose of the driver.

If they are original, both batteries are about 6 years old.  It may be time.  You should replace the external one

This solved the problem, thank you! I tried all of the different methods listed on the site and method 4 worked. The only issue I see from doing this is that the computer can easily overheat if it continuously runs at full CPU speed. What do you think? Have you encountered any negative effects from having the value data set to 4?

I've encountered no negative effects and let the computer run 24/7 for several days. But it just does light work and is not often under heavy loads for extended periods.
