System Recovery on a Refurbished T420

2015-01-16, 16:23 PM

I have a refurbished T420 and would like to do a system restore back to the factory settings.  However, I am getting an error message saying, "The product recovery function has been removed from this system".

I do see a partition on my hard drive called "Recovery image".  It's designated with the drive letter "D".  Within, that partition is a folder called "RecoveryImage" and in the folder is a large file called "Install.wim"

I suspect that I have to use some alternative procedures to do the restore because of this.  Has anyone had experience with this?  I googled around and it seems more complicated that what I am comfortable with.

I requested the recovery disk directly from Lenovo for my machine and assume this disk will be able to restore it back to it's factory state but neglected to confirm that.  They should be in early next  week.  Can someone confirm that is the case?

Thanks,

Stuart

As I prefer Intel's SSD I've used Intel Data Migration Software, free of charge version of Acronis True Image Home app with less but enough functionality to perform the cloning.

It's a bit strange you don't like Macrium as it's a popular free tool, for cloning and backups.

Hi

original Lenovo laptops don't have such drives (D), volumes you mentioned and .wim files. Seems it's a repair company initiative.

.wim file is an archive in ms format. In ideal case its content could be simply deployed on the partition. But we don't know what's this file exactly.

Yes, it does sound that way.  The Lenovo recovery method using F11 doesn't work and also the directions that came with the machine didn't work, which is under F8.  I ordered a recovery disk from Leneovo which should be in a couple days which I hope will do the trick.  The reason I'm doing this is that I'm trying to install a new SSD drive.  I've tried to clone a drive but it won't let me because the new SSD is smaller than the old drive.  When I try to shrink the parition on the old drive to make it the same as the new drive it won't let me because there are some files on the old drive which can't be me moved.  I've delete as much as I can off the old drive and run disc defrag but still it won't let me shrink the partition as much as I need to.

Hi,

The recovery DVDs from Lenovo should get you going.

Are you trying to shrink the C: partition from within Windows?  It's probably the page or hibernation file that is the problem.  If you want to keep trying while waiting for the DVDs you could try an off-line partitioning tool.  gParted on a Linux live CD or USB flash drive for instance.

There is some cloning software that can do a shrink during the clone op - Acronis for instance.

Hmmm.  I hadn't thought of that.  I can disable the page/swap file, do a refrag, and then try shrink the partition.  That then might allow me to get it small enough to do the clone.  Then I can obviously re-enable the swap file after I'm done.

Thanks.  I will give it a shot.

Bear in mind that having swap enabled on an SSD isn't recommended, especially with modern SSDs having fewer write cycles than their historic counterparts.

Okay, I will keep that in mind.  I didn't know that.  I've got 8gb of RAM anyway, so a swap file wouldn't be necessary anyway.

stuboyle,

note, I clonned entire 320, 500 GB HDD to the 128 GB SSD and msata SSD, w/o problems concerned with the smaller size for destination drive. The only condition - occupied size on the source drive should be less then the size of destination drive. It doesn't matter whether there are unmoved files on the source drive.

Cool.  What tool(s) did you use?  I'm using Macrium Reflect Free Edition and its not letting me.  Maybe the paid edition would allow me to do that but I would hate to spend money then find out later that I can't.  Some of the other programs I downloaded allow backups but not cloning on the free version.

The UPS man just delivered the Lenovo recovery disks, so I'm going to try those.  Though, it would be good to know how do the cloning regardless.
