T1 (AMD) series - TouchPad / Mouse is laggy or not working properly

2021-01-04, 15:13 PM

Hey All,

My Lenovo T1 (AMD) gen 1 laptop was delivered this morning

after a wait period of 45 days. I liked the laptop as it is quite thin

and light and feels nice. Its a Ryzen 7 with 16gb memory and

screen is 250 nits. It cost me around 107k INR.

The laptop came without any operating system installed so I have

installed Ubuntu 20.04 (LTS) and it is blazing fast but as soon as I

touched the mouse it started to behave very strangely.

I thought that it might be a temporary issue as I have just finished

installing the OS and maybe a reboot would settle it - but - NO!

1. When I connect and use an external USB mouse - it works fine (as expected).

2. When I try to use the touchpad, a couple of interesting things are observed:

    a) Sometimes it works fine, but, with a little lag. Meaning that if I move the

cursor from position A to position B, the cursor moves to the desired location

but with a noticeable delay which is bothersome.

    b) Sometimes it doesn't work. Despite swiping the finger across the touchpad

the cursor remains stationary and there is no activity.

    c) System is shuffling between these 2 states intermittently.

Need help with:

* Has anyone else encountered the same issue with Lenovo T14 OR any other model?

* Could this be a linux specific issue? I don't have the capacity to try out a windows OS copy

as I don't have any access to it.

If anyone has any information or pointers for me - please do share your kind advise as I have

tried and I am not able to fix it and I have not come across any helpful resource as of yet.

Hey ArGaurav,

Unfortunately I have experienced similar problems when using Windows 10. Even when messing in the UEFI BIOS my touchpad would sometimes freeze, which makes me believe that this is a hardware problem and not a driver problem. It's also not an isolated issue, as you can find other threads on this forum and on reddit by people experiencing similar problems:

https://forums.lenovo.com/t5/ThinkPad-T400-T500-and-newer-T-series-Laptops/T14-Gen-1-Terrible-Trackpad-Accuracy-and-Performance/m-p/5037111?page=1#5133991

I eventually "fixed" this issue by replacing the stock trackpad with a glass trackpad from the X1 / P1 ThinkPads. The X1 trackpad feels way nicer to use and never freezes, so it definitely is an improvement. It's not a perfect solution, as the trackpad sometimes won't be recognized after waking from hibernation, but a reboot always fixes this issue in my experience.

Kind Regards,

Ruben

Hello Ruben,

Thank you for your quick reply. I really appreciate the information

provided by you. It was really helpful.

So as it seems - I have been handed down a faulty product - not so?

Such a shame that after waiting for 45 days - I get a top of the line

"faulty" product, even after paying the "premium" price.

You mentioned that you "fixed" it - but who paid for the new glass trackpad?

Was it you?

Did you approach Lenovo to fix/repair/replace this piece and if so - how did it go?

Cheers,

Gaurav

Hey Gaurav,

I agree that it is quite shameful that Lenovo equips these premium machines with such janky trackpads.

The solution was suggested to me by other members from this community. I paid for it and I replaced it myself, so I can't comment on Lenovo's customer service. The total cost for the trackpad, including shipping, was about 20 USD.

Kind Regards,

Ruben

Good Evening,

How did you go about replacing the touchpad? I attempted to do mine but had hit and miss functionality, even in BIOS. Starting to wonder if the touchpad I received was faulty, if it was even genuine.

Re:T1 (AMD) series - TouchPad / Mouse is laggy or not working properly

Hello,

As it may seem my initial assessment of the situation

may have been incorrect and there is more to it as I attempt

to explain below.

As I dug deeper into the problem, I experimented with various OS flavors

and found that the touch-pad may not have been faulty after all. Although

its shoddy function convinced me thoroughly but so it seems that the

behaviour is related to the OS and touch-pad driver(s).

Although I was unable to test on windows (neither do I like windows nor do I

have access to a genuine copy - so couldn't test it) but on Linux systems - it worked

flawlessly with Centos 7/8. But since Centos 7/8 are as good as dead now (as Red

Hat will not be rolling out fresh releases) - I have decided to move to Ubuntu.

But for some unknown reason I face this particular issue i.e. when I boot up fresh,

It is guaranteed that the mouse will not function properly but when the laptop enters

sleep mode and wakes up from it - it starts to work just fine.

I discovered this purely by accident and then upon googling it - I was able to find similar

references to the said problem from other users around the world albeit it wasn't particularly

related to lenovo machines.

So just to conclude - at least in my case - It is now certain that it is a driver/OS issue hence

I would like to acquit the touch-pad from all accusations as of now. So I am aware of the issue,

but now at least I have a handle on it i.e. I suspend my machine, wake it up and viola !

for future readers - if you are facing the same issue i.e. touch pad doesn't work properly OR works

with a lag etc, Please experiment with different OS or driver combination(s).

I hope this helps.

Thanks,

Gaurav
