T14 AMD Gen1: nvme1 fails at reboot

Hello, 

 

After reboot, the nvme1 slot is not re-powered o re-initialized, because the device cannot be reached. 

The device, in my case is a Lenovo SSD. 

To access the device again, one must shut-down first, then power-on again.

The BIOS is version 1.30 of 04 Jan 2021.

 

The problem with nvme1 turns out to be a well known problem on forums,

but there does not seem to exist an entry in Lenovo's official forums (here).

In their case, the devices are Lenovo SSDs and Lenovo WLANs.

 

For the rest, my T14 is perfect.

 

I suspect the problem sits in the BIOS/firmware.

Just to clarify, the SSD is not recognized? Is this the replacement SSD? If yes, can you provide the FRU number and where did you get it?

In my case, the problem occurs with the SSD supplied by Lenovo with the T14, a WDC PC SN520 128GB, moved from nvme0 to nvme1. The problem also occurs with a WDC PC SN520 SDAPTUW-512G, same brand and model of Lenovo's. I did not try other SSDs as this is a working laptop.

 

I would not jump to the conclusion that the SSD is defective, as this problem is known to other people with other SSDs and WLANs devices. I think it is an initialisation glitch by the BIOS at *reboot*.

I've seen this problem.  Change boot mode from  quick to diagnostics. On a reboot, there's no drive on the boot screen and goes directly to boot manager.  Power it down and back up, you will see the drive.

 

I restored the system to a larger drive and had to power down and power up often to keep the restore going.   I have done it enough!  Seems to be a common problem.  99.999999% sure it's not the drives.

You can also disable Fast Startup in W10.

My issue was resolved by returning my drive for another.   You probably have a bad drive that should be covered with warranty?

I set the bios to show the diagnostic page at each boot/reboot.

At cold boots I see both nvme0 and nvme1.

At reboots, sometimes nvme1 is not shown.

 

Nvme1 disappears systematically at resume after sleep.

 

This is the detail from the linux kernel log.

Hi,

 

Can you confirm that you have the sleep mode set to 'Linux' in the BIOS? The AMD platforms don't support modern standby yet (aka 'Windows' mode in the BIOS) and so Legacy S3 support is needed on the platform.
