T14 (AMD) Memory + SSD Upgrade

2020-10-16, 22:12 PM

Hey everyone!

I am soon to receive my T14 (AMD - 20UDCT01WW), which I'm super excited about.
I bought it with the 16gb soldered DDR4 3200mhz RAM and the 128gb PCIe SSD installed.

I'm fairly new to laptops and compatibility and stuff, but I'm hoping to add another 16gb stick of RAM and upgrade to a bigger SSD.

Here are my questions:

  • Will a Samsung 970 EVO Plus 1TB NVMe M.2 Internal SSD be compatible with the laptop?
  • Will any SODIMM 16gb DDR4 3200mhz RAM stick work?
    • I was looking at a Samsung 16GB DDR4 3200MHz PC4-25600 SODIMM model M471A2K43DB1-CWE.

Thank you so much for your help.
Very much appreciated!

Hello TickTank,

Will a Samsung 970 EVO Plus 1TB NVMe M.2 Internal SSD be compatible with the laptop?

The Samsung 970 EVO Plus 1TB NVMe M.2 should be compatible on your T14 AMD  without any problems...

Will any SODIMM 16gb DDR4 3200mhz RAM stick work?

All the RAM could work but because some cheap SODIMM could affect the stability of your laptop,  it is highly recommanded to use a certified SODIMM on your T14, Samsung, Crucial...

I was looking at a Samsung 16GB DDR4 3200MHz PC4-25600 SODIMM model M471A2K43DB1-CWE

Yes you could take...  Ram is important for the performance of your Ryzen(see image) .. so I recommand  same frequency, equal quantity you have soldered (8+8 or 16+16) When i upgrade my Thinkpads since many years I always use Crucial and it always worked well ... But Samsung should be perfect .. but i didn't try it ..

If it helps please consider a star or solved problems ;p

Best regards

Hi, I'm a newbie, too, so I have a newbie question. When you upgrade your SSD, how do you also install the operating system? Or, is the OS already installed on the motherboard and the SSD is simply where files are stored?

How did all the upgrades work out for you? I'm also purchasing a new AMD based Lenovo T14 so I'm looking to do the exact same thing while saving some money. I appreciate the help.

cheers.

Download Macrium Reflect and buy an NVME enclosure. Plugable makes a good one but there are cheaper brands. Plenty of videos online how how to image the old drive. I'm not gonna type you a book here on what to do if you dont have the initiative to view them and read.

Hey Foul Animal!

Thanks for the reply.

JEShumMPK's reply is helpful. I actually haven't done the SSD switch over yet because I've been waiting for a particular M2 SSD Enclosure to go on sale.
But, JEShumMPK's suggestion is what I am planning to do. Pop the new SSD in the enclosure, plug in the USB, then clone the internal SSD to the external one, then swap them.

The OS is on the SSD, not the mobo. So, we gotta use the external enclosure to clone to the new one.

I also haven't purchased the RAM just yet, waiting for a sale haha.

I like JEShumMPK's suggestion of Macrium Reflect. Hadn't looked into that myself.

Hope this helps!
