T14 Gen 2 BIOS 1.40

2021-07-08, 14:24 PM

Hello,

After upgrading my T14 Gen 2 to latest BIOS 1.40 (released today) I started receiving error 1802: Unauthorized network card is plugged in. The problem seems to be in my WWAN card Fibcom L860 which worked just fine with this notebook before. Was it removed from the whitelist on purpose or by mistake?

Thanks!

Hi TheEragon!

Greetings

Based on the error, the card is not an authorized card for the system.

Can you provide the MTM of your machine and where did you get it?

Let us know.

It's T14 Gen 2 20W0-S0200, I got the modem and the laptop at a local Lenovo store where they told me that the modem should work with this model, which it did until BIOS update 1.40, I now downgraded to 1.37 and it works again.

BTW, the update also disabled SSD cards in the second M.2 slot. So I guess they only want to allow devices on the original parts list.

You can use the parts lookup here to check if the Fibocom is still listed as a compatible part; https://support.lenovo.com/us/en/partslookup#/

It is likely that the latest BIOS implements the latest whitelist parts too.

The question isn't whether the card is on the parts list. The card worked before, and so it's clear it is compatible on the technical side. The only thing that changed is that Lenovo just added a check to disable the laptop when the card is installed, even though the laptop is perfectly capable of supporting it.

Why does Lenovo think it's acceptable to remove functionality from a customer's purchased device after the fact, when there's no technical reason to do so? That's harmful to your customers and doesn't help anyone.

Latest provided BIOS on the support site are the latest certified firmware for all authorized device for the machine.

This ensures the full functionality of the machine the way it was intended.

If there are any devices that previously work with the older BIOS then best to stay with what works for you now unless you would like to upgrade the WLAN card to the whitelist of the new BIOS.

So if BIOS fixes some security issue but blocks my WWAN card I should stick with vulnerable version, just great!

Did the Fibcom L860 WWAN card come with the system?

Is it a Lenovo FRU or part number?

If the answer is yes to both questions then this needs to be escalated within Lenovo. If not, then unauthorized WWAN cards are as always vulnerable to whitelist updates.
