T14 Gen2i erratic, stuttery TouchPad

Hello Everyone!

I got my hands on a Lenovo T14 Gen2i last year with the following configuration:

20W0012MHV

At the first Windows install (W10) when I got it I let Windows Update do it's thing and install all the drivers, then I downloaded Vantage and it also did a couple updates, so I am fully up to date, but I have a problem with the TouchPad. Sometimes it's laggy and erratic. And it can be a huge pain to use, because it's not precise at all. You can misclick every single time on something because it randomly decides to start stuttering.

Also noticed it on the TrackPoint too.

I have an X13 Gen2i too as my work laptop, but it doesn't have any issues like that, everything it buttery smooth (maybe because it uses Elan instead of Synaptics?)

I just tried to get used to it (which is hard considering that it wasn't cheap) but suddenly from one day to another this issue disappeared... until a next Windows reinstall which happened couple days ago, but this time I installed W11. The problem came back. So I think that's software/driver related.

The weird thing is that it only occurs on battery power, and not present all the time. So let's say if I have something opened like a browser its ok, but if I just standing on the Windows desktop and start moving the cursor with the touchpad it starts lagging until I open something. If I insert the charger it disappears and the TouchPad becomes smooth again and stays so until I disconnect the charger no matter what I do on it.

Can this be some sort of power management or energy saving thing? Which reduces the polling rate after a while when there is nothing happens? I have everything set to balanced (in the BIOS too), but no noticeable change if I set it to Performance or other settings.

I tried everything: older drivers, older firmwares (SynReflash) etc. But they didn't help.

What could be the issue?

Also worth noting that if I uninstall the UltraNav/TP driver OR the Intel Graphics driver, this issue is not present.

Re:T14 Gen2i erratic, stuttery TouchPad

Hello Everyone!

I think I found out what's causing this issue above.

It was a driver problem as I thought.

Sadly I couldn't find out which one is causing it exactly, but I was able to solve it by running a full driver update via a third party tool called Snappy Driver Installer Origin (SDIO).

So for context, after a clean install of Windows 11, I let Windows Update to do it's thing and download every updates. Then I downloaded Lenovo Vantage and let it also do a full update.

Then I installed the latest Intel Iris Xe Driver manually because the one installed by Windows Update was more than 1 years old and I like to keep graphics drivers up to date.

But seems those weren't enough.

As I launched SDIO it instantly found at least 20 driver updates.

There were some which I skipped though, like for the TouchPad it would install a driver from 2013 and replace the current latest one, and also it would replace the  Synaptics SMBus driver with Intel SMBus, but I also skipped that because the Synaptics one is needed for the TouchPad to work. It would stop working with the Intel version, I already tried that before. But I installed everything else, like Thunderbolt Controller driver, Intel Serial GPIO, Intel Dynamic Tuning, Intel HID Event Filter (those seems like chipset related drivers), Card reader, Camera, WiFi and BT drivers, Dolby APO, Realtek Sound and every audio related drivers.

Some of the above drivers were as old as 2020 or 2021 and these were installed from Windows Update so seems there is no newer from those on Winupdate, but this program could update them to 2023 or beyond. It's kinda weird.

And after this update the TouchPad and TrackPoint stutter completely went away.

So the problem was caused by some outdated drivers that doesn't have never versions on Windows Update or Vantage.

Re:T14 Gen2i erratic, stuttery TouchPad

grab the lenovo vantage tool and see if it finds better drivers. your machine can run windows 11 which tends to support more hardware

Windows 11 24H2 will require 8GB RAM and Nahalen (45nm, 2008) or better. Next tier is x86-64-v3 is Haswell (22nm) and above, x86-64-v4 is Skylake (14nm) and above. Machines older than Intel Coffee Lake are heavily impacted by mitigations for Spectre and Meltdown. Intel Alder Lake and better runs Windows 11 really good using 64GB memory

Re:T14 Gen2i erratic, stuttery TouchPad

I already installed all the drivers,

Vantage can not find anything since the system is fully up to date.

There are no newer drivers.

I also tried to reinstall Windows offline and let Vantage install everything instead of Windows Update (there was a case couple years ago where the Windows Update provided driver was broken and I had to get it from the manufacturer) so I thought that may be the case here, but no.

That also didn't help.

guess its time to install windows 11 clean and see if that helps

Re:T14 Gen2i erratic, stuttery TouchPad

Guess the cheapest fix is using a mouse as spare parts as awkward to install

Re:T14 Gen2i erratic, stuttery TouchPad

Yeah I can use external mouse anytime but thats still not a solution for the problem.

I'm almost 100% sure that's a driver problem that could be fixed somehow.

Sometimes driver problems can be frustrating. Usually the Lenovo Vantage app can find updates.
