T14 and USB-C Gen2 doesnt work with 2x2K external monitoprs (resolution issue)

2021-04-27, 9:19 AM

Dear community,

I have a problem! I've got a T14 Gen 1 (Intel; 20S00057GE) and a Lenovo USB-C Docking Station (Gen2) which supports Display-Port 1.4 and up to three external monitors. I connected my two 2K-Monitors using Display-Port 1.4 cables to the docking station and the docking station via USB-C to the Thinkpad but the resolution doesn't match!

- 1 Monitor in 2K no problem!

- 2 Monitors, only one does work in 2K the other is only getting Full HD (1920x1080)

What I tried:

- Installed drivers

- Updated firmware on docking-station and laptop

- Different cables, different ports

It seems the setup isn't compatible?

My question to you: What hardware (laptop or docking-station) should I use to get 2x2K monitors running?

Cheers,

John

Your system does support only DP1.2. Using a USB-C dock and not a Thunderbolt dock limits the available data rate to 50% only.

That's the reason why only one QHD (2560x1440) display is supported.

Either get a system that supports DP1.4 (like the new T14 Gen2 if you want an Intel system)  or get a Thunderbolt 3 or 4 dock.

A workaround could be to connect one display to dock and the other display to the system's 2nd USB-C port.

you can check the available display and video output configurations

Thanks so much for the info Bro, and I have the exactly same problems/cases as below, and really appreciate your help on how to realize two 2K@60Hz resolutions use at the same time if that's possible.

-- Levono T14 Gen1 laptop (having one 1.4b-HDMI, one Thunderbolt 3 port)
-- ThinkPad USB-C Dock Gen 2 (having two DP ports, one HDMI)
-- 2x identical 2K monitor Dell U2713HM (having one 1.4-HDMI, one 1.2-DP port, one VGA, one DVI)

I have tried below connections but cannot get both 2K@60Hz :(

1. Monitor1 DP to Dock DP port ---> got 2k@60Hz
    Monitor2 DP to Dock DP port ---> got 1080P

2. Monitor1 DP to Dock DP port ---> got 2k@60Hz
    Monitor2 1.4-HDMI to Laptop Thunderbolt 3 (via USB-C to HDMI cable) ---> got 1080p

3. Monitor1 DP to Dock DP port ---> got 2k@60Hz
    Monitor2 1.4-HDMI to Laptop 1.4b-HDMI ---> got 1080p

According to your advice "A workaround could be to connect one display to dock and the other display to the system's 2nd USB-C port.", may you please suggest which connection should I use between Monitor2 to Laptop to obtain both monitors running at 2K@60Hz, considering that my monitors do not have Thunderbolt 3 port?

Really appreciate your help.

Are you sure  the HDMI input port supports HDMI1.4?

Have you ever managed to use the native WQHD resolution on HDMI input with this monitor?

2. Monitor1 DP to Dock DP port ---> got 2k@60Hz
    Monitor2 1.4-HDMI to Laptop Thunderbolt 3 (via USB-C to HDMI cable) ---> got 1080p

Try a USB-C to DP cable.  Forget that HDMI even exists.  Native video format of the USB-C/Thunderbolt ports is DisplayPort. No HDMI adapters are required unless the monitor does not support DP input signals.

Really appreciate your help.

hope this helps.  The pictures were very helpful and show very simply what you were trying to do.

---I thought it's 1.4-HDMI in the first place according to Dell Official Manual, but I missed the following info, which was my bad.

    Also, I found the same confirmation from the Dell community.

    That may be the reason I have never got WQHD by using HDMI cable, even directly connecting only 1 monitor to laptop.

---I'll try that way, which should work then and it's promising :)
