T14 gen1 AMD and Hyper-V => bluescreen on boot

2020-08-19, 21:12 PM

Hello,

I received my T14 with an AMD Ryzen 4750U the other day. Fantastic machine. For work I need to use Hyper-V (docker etc.), but when I activate the Hyper-V feature in Windows, the device started to BSOD on startup. (SYSTEM_THREAD_EXCEPTION_NOT_HANDLED). I had to boot into safe mode in order to disable it again. I hope there's a solution, because otherwise the T14 is a really nice machine.

AMD virtualization settings are enabled in BIOS... I am using the latest BIOS (R1BET36W1.05)

I hope somebody can help me, as this is a showstopper for an otherwise really nice machine.

Thanks

I can verify the issue. Same issues on my T14 Gen1 AMD.

And I noticed that this occurs also when there is endpoint protection enabled from Intune. Problematic policy is Defender Application Guard which enables hypervisor to run Edge.

This can be huge issue for enterprises.

Actually you don't need Intune for initiate problem.

It was enough to install Application Guard from Microsoft Defender:

Yep, it's all related to Hyper-V, which is a windows technology. Some of us (need to) work with Windows, and this breaks a lot of critical (security related) functionality, e.g. - Hyper-V VMs - WSL2 - Windows Sandboxing - Application Guard

I know some ThinkPad models are having a problem like this, whenever "Enhanced Windows Biometric Security" is enabled in BIOS Setup -> Security -> Virtualization menu.  Could you please check and make sure this setting is disabled?

This helped me too

Did you previously enable this BIOS setting yourself?  Or did the ThinkPad come from factory with it enabled (it's not supposed to)?  Or maybe the ThinkPad came from your company's IT department and they enabled it?  I'm trying to understand how people are getting into this situation.  Thanks.

By the way, it's the combination of this BIOS setting, Hyper-V, and the 2020-08 Cumulative Update for Windows 10 version 2004 that recently came from Windows Update.  Another way to avoid this problem is to uninstall that update, and then turn off Windows Update so that you don't get it again.  Something in this update is not compatible with Hyper-V and the Enhanced Biometric Security.

I probably enabled this setting to see if it has any effect when I tried to see if vmware workstation can handle nested virtualization scenarios on this machine. I was getting error messages that hinted at BIOS settings. In any case, all seems to be fine now :-)
