T14s drains battery after BIOS Update

2021-02-05, 6:05 AM

Hi,

I have updated my Lenovo T14s from the BIOS version 1.05 to 1.30.

Since then the battery drains per day 25% (approx 1% per hour) if the machine is in hibernate. Before the BIOS update everything was working well.

I already set the BIOS to its default and disabled USB always on and wake on lan.

Moreover, I removed from the energy settings of the devices in Windows all the devices that could wake up the machine from hibernate.

Do you have any ideas what I can do? This started really just to happen after the BIOS update.... No other changes have been applied...

Thanks and best,

Hello ThinkPadUser24!

Greetings

Can you try installing the previous version of the BIOS here: https://download.lenovo.com/pccbbs/mobiles/r1cuj60w.exe

and check if the issue is still the same?
Before proceeding, disable the Secure Rollback Prevention in the BIOS first. To boot to BIOS, follow this: https://support.lenovo.com/us/en/solutions/ht500222-recommended-ways-to-enter-bios-boot-menu-thinkpad-thinkcentre-thinkstation

Let us know how it goes.

Hi,

I downgraded the BIOS now to 1.29. After downgrade I reloaded the defaults and disabled "usb always on" and wake on LAN.

A couple of other observations to share:

- I also disabled "fast startup" in Windows and shutdown the machine => the battery still drains as fast as in hibernate

- I looked through the updates of the "Lenovo System Update". At the same time I upgraded to the BIOS 1.30 also the "Intel BT Driver (Windows 10 Version 1809 or Later)" was updated to 22.0.02.

I will now shutdown the machine again and keep you posted in a couple of hours.

Thanks,

Hi, you might also want to try to set "Linux" as sleep mode in BIOS. I know that hibernate should be a different thing, but it is worth a try since there have been many issues with "Windows 10" sleep mode. Best regards, Jens

Good point.

I forgot to mention that. Sleep State in BIOS is „Linux“. I changed that from day one and also checked after all the up- and downgrades...

Have you disabled the Secure Rollback Prevention in the BIOS before installing the previous version? How about uninstalling the battery driver and restarting the computer to reinstall itself? Try also installing the power management driver here: https://pcsupport.lenovo.com/us/en/products/laptops-and-netbooks/thinkpad-t-series-laptops/thinkpad-t14s-type-20uh-20uj/downloads/driver-list/component?name=Power%20Management

Yes, I disabled the secure rollback prevention. Flashing to the older version was successful. I now wait and observe if the drain persists.

I will update tomorrow morning to see if it still drains the battery over night. Fingers are crossed...

Re:T14s drains battery after BIOS Update

Based on my current knowledge, the BIOS version 1.30 seems to cause the issue.

To summarize my findings and config:

* BIOS Config

** Sleep State: Linux

** USB always on: Disabled

** Wake on LAN: Disabled

* Windows

** all deviced which could wakeup the device from Standby/Hibernate (powercfg - devicequery wake_armed): disabled

** timer for activation: disabled

** fast startup: disabled

BIOS Version | Drain Hibernate | Drain Shutdown

1.05 | none | none

1.30 | at least 1% per hour | at least 1 % per hour

1.29 | none | none

I also noted that with BIOS version 1.30 after shutdown, the laptop immediately starts if the lid is opened. With 1.29 I have to press the power button before it starts.

Can someone from Lenovo please fix the BIOS version 1.30?
