T14s extreme throttling (<0.5ghz instead of 3-4.5ghz)

2020-07-29, 9:20 AM

System: Thinkpad T14s with the Intel i7-1050U CPU, no dedicated graphics card, latest Windows 10 as OS, one external ThinkVision T27i monitor.

Problem:

The processor frequency drops to an extremely low value (0.3-0.5 ghz) and stays there (see picture below). As a consequence, everything stutters and becomes completely unusable. When I unplug the power supply, the frequency recovers after 1-2 minutes. Then I can plug in the power supply again and the frequency is normal again. HOWEVER, then the system is in a weird state where every CPU intensive (e.g. LaTeX compilation) action leads to the frequency dropping again (3.5ghz -> 2.5ghz). Normally, my CPU frequency goes UP when doing something like that (3.5ghz -> 4.0 to 4.5ghz).  This weird state sometimes only resets after a deep shutdown.

When this problem appears:

  • During video conferences it randomly appears.
  • Sometimes just playing a youtube video triggers it.
  • Using my Powered USB Type-C Travel Hub to connect a second external T27i display makes this problem to appear more frequently.

Regarding thermal throttling:

This is not normal thermal throttling. When the problem does not appear, I can play a 4k Video, where all 4 cores are between 88°C and 91°C (according to CoreTemp),

but the CPU frequency is still somewhat stable (2.7 to 3.5ghz).

Things I tried so far (unsuccesfully):

  1. Updated all drivers with Vantage.
  2. Installed the Intel Graphics Driver (non-Lenovo) for the integrated graphics chip.
  3. Updated BIOS.
  4. Checked Win 10 energy options.
  5. Checked BIOS configuration, tried different settings there. Tried a reset to default.
  6. Used another power outlet to power the ThinkPad.
  7. Disabled fast start, Uninstalled AHCI graphics driver and Lenovo power management driver in the device manager. Restarted and reinstalled specific drivers (thermal solution, system interface, PM device, graphics driver). This was suggested by phone support.
  8. Did the Lenovo system diagnostics (no problem detected).
  9. Disable HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINESYSTEMCurrentControlSetServicesIntelppm with regedit (this only sets the frequency to 2.3ghz permanently).
  10. Uninstalled the Hyper V drivers in the device manager as this was suggested in another post.

In short: Something with the CPU frequency control/graphics chip/power management is deeply broken and sometimes makes my system unusable. Does anyone have any ideas?

Lenovo staff!

You must come up with a very good answer for this.

For several threads I and several other users have been writing that our T480, T490 and T490s models behave like exactly this.

CPU drops to 400Mhz levels even in basic TEAMS VIDEO CONFERENCE.

And now we have here an example that T14s Intel model does the same.

How on earth is this possible to go on for 3 years without a fix even with newest T14 models?? This is increble lack of customer relations. Incredible lack of moral, good will etc. Fix the problem with T480, T490 AND the T14 models.

And yes for our companies 10 thinkpads, several motherboard changes have been done, everything updated. Just like in this T14s case. Nothing helps when the laptop is in its ultra dock or charger. When on battery the laptop goes to 100C CPU without throttling lower than base clock. With charger it goes to the stupid 1990's level of 200-400Mhz and everything just jams to a near halt.

The same problem. The new T14 with I5, frequency still 0,8Ghz even with benchmark running.

I have had the same problem on two ThinkPad T14 that we received from Lenovo for testing. Updating the BIOS to the latest version (1.09) didn't help. Installing the latest Power Management drivers didn't help either...

The issue seems to be caused by the service "Lenovo Intelligent Thermal Solution Service". After disabling this service and rebooting the computer, the throttling issue is gone. Turboboost works as expected and the computer doesn't have any thermal issues.

Sorry, I cannot confirm that. I still have the same problem even when disabling Lenovo Intelligent Thermal Solution Service. After trying that I also tried it with Intel Dynaming Tuning and Lenovo PM Manager disabled. It still did not work.

When the extreme throttling occurs (< 0.5 ghz) I can restart the Lenovo Intelligent Thermal Solution Service service which gets me to this weird state inbetween described in my original post above where every CPU intensive action leads to the frequency dropping again (3.5ghz -> 1.0-2.5ghz). But this is not really getting the systen back to its full performance (so this fix is just similar to unplugging the power cord, waiting a few minutes and plugging it in again).

In the meantime I tried to play around with the Intel Extreme Tuning Utility. I noticed that the system has severe power limit throtteling. So there seems to be a connection.

However, even when trying different Turbo Boost Power Limits I could not really get a stable system state that works for me.

To be honest I wish I never got this device!

This worked for mee, too. Thanks, Sergio! Nevertheless, this is quite embarrassing and should be fixed by Lenovo asap.

@uleay

I have just had a phone call with Lenovo Enterprise Support.

The issue was solved in the BIOS version 1.09. If you installed this BIOS version already and the issue is still present, you'll have to access the BIOS and select the option "Config > Power > Disable Internal Battery", after rebooting the computer, Turbo Boost should work again without disabling the service.

I tried this a few weeks ago and worked.

I got the BIOS version 1.09 installed, but the problem persists.

Regarding the "Disable Internal Battery Fix":

Doesn't that just mean that I cannot use the T14a without the power cable (in battery mode) anymore?

Even if it fixes the issue, it just makes my notebook a PC that is not mobile. And that is not what I wanted when I purchased the T14s

Disable the internal Battery, is a temporary measure. If you did this after rebooting your laptop .. the battery is back .. and working ... So your laptop will be mobile

Tried to fix it with the "Disable Internal Battery" and it actually worked for me (Y).

Next problem now is if i plug in my notebook (T14s) to the Docking Station (Thunderbolt 3 Dock Gen 2) the notebook fan is going nuts. If i unplug it wait a minute, the fan stops and the notebook works totally fine.
