Re:T14s extreme throttling (<0.5ghz instead of 3-4.5ghz)

OK, how many days after you got T14s Gen2? What exactly model is this? (first four letters) Is this Windows Pro which laptop came with or your custom image you built in your IT?

Re:T14s extreme throttling (<0.5ghz instead of 3-4.5ghz)

I could replicate the problem on my T14 when:

  • doing anything that required CPU+GPU (just having a video editor open was enough)
  • laptop came back from sleep and i started a Zoom call where either I shared my screen or somebody else

However the lastest BIOS fixed all issues for me. Until I needed a feature that was only available in the DEV build (21390) of the Windows Insiders.

Then all of my problems came back. I'm solving the issue by having Throttlestop constantly on and limiting the CPU freq to max 2.5ghz.

You mention all the time that you have no problems with your P43s and Zooming. OK I get it, but you can' compare P43s with T14s 20T0. You can' even compare two different models of T14s. Look how BIOSes differ between models:
T14s Gen1 (20T0,20T1)  1.15
T14s Gen1 (20UH,20UJ)  1.32
T14 Gen 1 (20UD,20UE)  1.32
T14 Gen 1 (20S0,20S1,20S2,20S3) 1.19 [Problem fixes] Fixed an issue where CPU has very low frequency after resume from sleep mode.

I think that there are symptoms being mixed up in this thread, but maybe I am wrong and I am overlooking something? @maxt32 could you please kindly provide me the case number through private message from the investigation of the symptom that the service conducted?

Guys, I really appreciate your effort but shouldn' be lenovo the one who is doing all these tests? I need a solution yesterday! I can' belive this.

I agree, but as maxt32 stated, he already sent in samples to our service and unfortunately, our technicians were not able to see the symptom when they were having a closer look at it.

@all - are all your machines which are affected by this symptom configured with a dedicated GPU? If so, could you please try to disable the hardware acceleration under the settings of Teams / Zoom and try to reproduce the issue again, while closely monitoring the temperatures of the machine?

I believe i have an integrated CPU. It's "Intel UHD Graphics". I've tried to disable the GPU acceleration anyway and I'm currently in a Teams call with 6 people and everything is sluggish and unusable.

I really hope you guys can fix this soon with the highest priority. The negative impact is so big :(

There’s no T14s with a discrete GPU… it’s all Intel integrated GPU; only T14 has some discrete GPU configurations.

Too bad T14s Gen2 is having same issues; looks like next laptop won’t be a Thinkpad this time… a pro laptop that can’t handle basic office tasks is a no-go in a corporate environment.

IMO its a thermal design issue. You have a motherboard that is as thin as a cracker housed in a slightly larger casing also wafer thin. What do you expect? Elevate it to let the laptop ventilate. Ad nausem I have a P43s and do Zoom calls with 10 people sometimes even more and have no throttling.

Well I expect a laptop that cost this much to be able to run a simple Zoom call.  It is not a thermal design issue, it is a software bug as stated many times already in this thread.

Before upgrading to DEV Windows build I was able to do Zoom calls normally, 4K video editing was working without problems and I even tried running Call of Duty Warzone and it was working fine. Everything for longer periods of time.

I work with computers and laptops since XX century and Pentium II. I have never seen anything like that.

Until series of T490s we haven't had problems like that. This is disaster.

Yesterday I had funny issue with T14s Gen1 20T0. Shame I didn't record that.

I have Windows 10 Pro, completely clean, only Vantage, Teams, Intel Utility, Edge.

So I turned off Teams and I have seen already that CPU isn't reaching 3,5-4,0GHz.

So I opened one empty tab in Edge. 0,5-1,0GHz for couple seconds.

So I pressed CTRL+T like 20 times and T14s was like 0,5-0,8GHz for couple minutes.

Again.... clean Windows 10 Pro and just Edge. Installed 1st of June.

Temperature was around 60C. This is definitely not thermal.

After restart everything is fine. If that will happen again I will record that. Disaster.

So Teams with multiple participants is just one way to replicate that, maybe the best. However yesterday I had this without MS Teams and anything else.....

Sounds exactly like what I'm experiencing.

Re:T14s extreme throttling (<0.5ghz instead of 3-4.5ghz)

Next chapter of my story :)

So after 11:00 I rebooted T14s.

11:28 I initiated stress test on Better Performance. It was stable and good for almost 2 hours.

Then sudden drop out of nowhere.

In logs at 13:20:

The system is entering connected standby

Reason: Idle Timeout.

Source: Kernel-Power

Event ID: 506 - @all check if something like that happens before your problems. In my opinion this is probable that this T14s suffers from something similar that T14 (which was fixed)

Next I left laptop idle for over 4 hours.

Then I came back and recorded that movie: https://streamable.com/e3z6fc

Have fun watching :)

And by the way that was on RDP session.

And of course I have only Intel UHD integrated GPU in T14s
