Re:T14s extreme throttling (<0.5ghz instead of 3-4.5ghz)

@maxt32 what a great troubleshooting, hope Lenovo can use your info to get to the root of this.

As a side note, I’ve seen this issue frequently related to wake-from-sleep or after-sleep workflows. I don’t have fast startup enabled (so every cold boot is, indeed, cold) nor do I have sleep enabled (and even if I had, I’m never idle more than 5 minutes in work hours)… and for example, today, I had to reboot three times : twice for Teams meetings causing the issue and one where just opening Visual Studio (not even loading a project!) made the CPU crawl to 0.39Ghz. (just Edge with a single tab was loaded besides that).

Also, I have a three monitor setup: internal display, and 2 Thinkvision monitors, one via HDMI and the other one via USB-C to DisplayPort adapter. Also, a quite noisy cooling pad… CPU temp was always <=45C when the issue happened.

BIOS update didn't help. And I think I see now official record: 0,00GHz :)

Seriously how can this not be fixed yet... my computer is also complete unusable. I'll have to give it back to IT and ask them to return it.

Works piece of electronics I've ever owned, so far :-/

And is there a way we can mark it not solved? It's not solved.... INCREDIBLE!

Woah, 0.00GHz… that should be on some kind of “wall of shame” on Lenovo offices; I can’t believe a company so huge can have an error this big for so long and not even acknowledge there’s an issue here.

And T14s Gen 2 has the same issue, so… no more business thinkpads for me. This is no chasis redesign or 7row keyboard or other aesthetic changes of thinkpads of old, this is buying a computer that doesn’t work as a computer… from the most reputed business laptop vendor nonetheless.

Lenovo, step up and fix this; it’s not domestic customers fighting over silly details, it’s corporate users complaining about large scale defective products. I wonder how many huge contracts will be lost over this in due time :(

Utterly disappointed in Lenovo. It's unbelievable, it seems that the last BIOS update made it even worse.

@Nizzyx

I am not even sure Lenovo acknowledge there is actually any problem despite the fact that at least 10 people from around the world reported it in this thread.

For now I can tell that 1.17 BIOS made it even worse. How to downgrade to 1.13 or older?

Thankfully I only purchased 4 of T14s and since August 2020 I stopped buying that crap. People still work on T460s/T470s/T480s/T490s.

2 of those users gave back laptops, 2 other on vacation now but when they come I assume it's already enough for them "working" on T14s.

I am waiting for T14s Gen2, but @tmarkussen said this issue is also present on that series. I am super afraid for the delivery :|

Re:T14s extreme throttling (<0.5ghz instead of 3-4.5ghz)

Had a fun anecdote happen today:

Was in a Teams meeting, about 60 attendants, I was presenting a PPT. Top execs from various IT firms between the attendants (names are confidential, but think 20K+ employee companies).

On the third slide my mouse pointer feels sluggish… out of muscle memory, I press Ctrl+Shift+Esc to open task manager; oblivious to the fact I’m sharing my desktop. Task manager magnificently takes a few seconds to load and show CPU speed at 0.39Ghz.

Someone opens the mic and I hear: “Lenovo, huh?”… another person unmutes and “T-Series, right?”. This is C-level people in huge companies aware of the issue; I mean, for C-level people to be aware of such a detail means it’s not something we’re debugging in a forum, it’s a global scale problem. I quickly restart the Lenovo Thermal Service so it stabilizes at 2Ghz and continue the presentation.

After it ended, I had some personal interviews with attendants to gather feedback about the presentation. Three of them jokingly comment about the Lenovo T-Series problem, it’s a known issue and their enterprise level VIP support has no word to say about it; some are already planning to change suppliers (companies with more than 15K laptops deployed)., as Teams/Zoom/Hangouts are the most used office tools in these pandemic work-from-home days; which are the most effective ways to trigger this issue.

I’m afraid this won’t be solved ever: or it’s a hardware problem Lenovo will not acknowledge cause they can’t feasibly recall thousands of defective units, or it’s a software issue they can’t find the root cause for and we’ll be waiting until these models are out of support or someone finds a 100% repeatable way of reproducing so it can be properly debugged.

In any way, an unfair situation for us consumers; and a sad realization this won’t be solved in the lifetime of our otherwise beloved machines. I, for one, won’t be buying any pro hardware from Lenovo again when other firms are providing perfectly working machines for a similar price-to-feature ratio.
