Re:T14s extreme throttling (<0.5ghz instead of 3-4.5ghz)

2021-07-02, 14:14 PM

hmmmm..... P1 Gen3 20TH (BIOS 1.16) with 16 logical cores 64GB RAM and I can do the same when on RDP and screen goes off.

0,79GHz flat line

Maybe this is 10th/11th gen Intel CPU problem and Microsoft and Lenovo

I didn't have that on 9th and older Intel gen

I wonder if employees will notice anything

Re:T14s extreme throttling (<0.5ghz instead of 3-4.5ghz)

Received my p14s gen 2 today back from repair, straight out of the box it was still throttling down to 0.39ghz, then I updated it to the 1.37 bios and it seemed to be working fine.

Then I had an update for the power and thermal service through vantage and now it's back to throttling 0.39ghz, this is most likely a coincidence as I didn't test for too long but this paired with the restarting LITSSVC fix makes me think there's something wrong with that?

Brand new T14s out of the box tested on stress test, after 15 minutes same issue, thermal throttling and drops of cpu frequency down to 0.6 ghz while using a docking station. Also tested with a brand new docking. Is there any update about when it will be solved?

Upd: All last version drivers were installed and also tested with drivers out of the box, so it don't seems to be a recent issue. Without a docking it seems to work quite ok.

@vladtf thermal throttling under a stress test is still understandable (even if it only happening while docked is quite a **bleep**); but the general issue seems to be non-thermal throttling under light loads for no real reason…

Seems like using a dock, having the screen off while connected via RDP, etc raise some kind of “flag” (apparently DPTF being the culprit here as many issues disappear when disabling that) that the Lenovo Thermal Service somehow misinterprets and throttles the CPU to ridiculous levels with no real reason…

NEW BIOS!!!!!!!! :) Same version but new ECP

Please test people and give feedback

<1.17>
 UEFI: 1.17 / ECP: 1.11
- (Fix) Fixed an issue where CPU performance may slow down when heavy loading.

Thanks, sendi11. So far this seems to have fixed the issue that occurs with Remote Desktop Connection. I will keep testing. MM

{Ok can you try this. It seems to be working for me. This is from Lenovo, finally got a response from them.

1. Upgrade to the latest Lenovo Intelligent Thermal Solution Driver (Version 2.0.369.1) (https://download.lenovo.com/pccbbs/mobiles/n1zdy58w.exe)

2. Make the following registry change: [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\LITSSVC\IC\CONFIG]
"MSC"=dword:00000000

3. Reboot

EDIT: You might have to add that registry key if it doesn't exist.}

Well, BIOS update installed!

Haven’t had the chance to test videoconference yet cause I’m on vacation; but looks like throttling thresholds have changed for the better! Now I can sustain a huge TDP load for long… it thermal throttles -totally normal-, but CPU is never down from 3.0 GHz. Similar workloads threw me back to 0.39Ghz before the update, so not bad at all! Finally have a powerful laptop that can sustain huge loads without artificial performance issues! Feels like a new machine!

There was a ton of Intel driver updates today too… maybe it has something to do with that also. Whatever it is, I’m happy to see the machine “behave” as it should! Looking forward to test videoconferencing now, if that works without issues, I guess we could finally have all this trouble over…

HI @JDOnno

do you remember what came from Intel? I'd like to read release notes.

Was it through Vantage/System Update?

When comes to my users I personally installed latest BIOS for them. But they started vacation so I will have first feedback in three weeks I guess.

It would be nice if someone having that problem could share if latest BIOS fixed that issue during videocalls.

@maxt32 Don’t have the laptop with me right now to check which drivers got updated, but it was via Windows Update for sure: many Intel & Realtek driver updates.

What I’ve noticed is that on “best performance” mode; now “thermal throttling” kicks in before “power limit throttling”… and it is less aggressive at that too: now temps swing from 60 to 97 C a lot, but performance is constant. Before the patch, temps were swinging between 50 and 60, but performance was severely degraded without any thermal throttling. I think fans are louder too, but that’s “expected” and really not a problem for me: if I want performance, give me performance, the fan is not loud at all even at max speed.

Will do more tests once I’m back to work, but at least this looks promising… without any obscure registry hack nor 3rd party tools (a la Throttlestop).
