Thanks for quick response, get good vacation time, free from throttling problems ;)

Waiting for more feedback once you're back at work.

Re:T14s extreme throttling (<0.5ghz instead of 3-4.5ghz)

Sooooo, I've doing more tests:

Initial condition is: Windows 10 Pro, Lenovo provided image. All updates from Windows update / Lenovo Vantage applied, used Intel XTU for monitoring. AC connected, system set up as "Best performance". Two external screens (Full HD), one via USB-C to DP, the other one via HDMI; plus the internal display.

- First I made some synthetic tests, just running stress tests / benchmarks and observing how the system behaved. It just follows normal logic: first CPU goes super hot and thermal throttles (97/98C), then temp gets around 80/85 C and power limit throttles lowering CPU to about 3 Ghz average. Expected behaviour, I'd even say excellent considering 40C ambient room temperature. Fan was at a constant 4.2K RPM. TDP reached 60W max, stayed stabled at 45W on load, 15W on idle.

- Then I made some real-world tests: updating Visual Studio while playing 4K video, transferring huge files from NAS over WiFI 6, copying many small files to external USB HD.... everything went perfect, no slowdowns or weird behaviour.

- Finally made some videconferences, the achiles' heel of this system until now:

+ One Google Meets, 6 participants, me sharing screen and camera on.

+ One Microsoft Teams, 35 participants, everyone with camera on, me sharing screen and camera on.

+ One Microsoft Teams, 10 participants, everyone with camera on.

I'm happy to say all video conferences were buttery smooth: no slowdown, no CPU going 0.39Ghz, no audio distortion.... everything worked as expected.

Can't really try the "connect via RDP while screen off" scenario as I don't have another computer at hand right now; but I think that issue is more related to the "presence" thing where the computer throttles when it thinks there's no one present.

@maxt32 the windows updates I had on top of the bios update were these: (+ Windows 10 21H1 cummulative update KB5004237).

Probably too soon for a final judgement, but it looks like all issues (at least on my side) have been solved by the latest BIOS update (not really BIOS, but EC, still appears as a BIOS update on Vantage).

I am super happy to hear that @JDOnno

Your report is a cliffhanger but fortunately without twist :)

Thanks for showing me updates. I think they do not relate that much to our issue.

I have read on Carbon thread https://forums.lenovo.com/topic/view/1301/5073083?page=30 post no 300 that in most cases "Better Performance" should be used. That post makes sense to me. Maybe Best is good for gaming, rendering etc.

When comes to RDP issue this I think is related to Modern Standby. In parallel as I mentioned I sent my T14s to Lenovo and they were able to replicate that issue. I believe this is not T14s issue only but as I tested T14s Gen2, P1 Gen3. So maybe even all 10th/11th gen Intel CPUs installed in Lenovo.

I will leave them T14s until they fix, but that was easy to replicate so they didn't call me nuts.

@tmarkussen how's your T14s Gen2? I got 5 of them but still haven't issued to end users because of vacation.

Maybe if you still have issues we should create new thread and ask for help?

@maxt32 I usually use “better performance”, but did the test on “best performance” cause that way, at least for me, the 0.39 issue happened faster… with the made up theory that if it isn’t triggered on “best”, won’t be triggered on “better” either :)

Very good news about Lenovo being able to reproduce on your machine! I guess that’s an important step to get to the root of this (if it still hasn’t been fixed, I wouldn’t discard this issue yet that has been happening for months on MANY machines for just a couple tests).

About modern standby… it’s not just that, Lenovo has additional services to “enhance” modern standby: on Vantage you can see the “presence” it detects in a super-cool graphic, that is backed by an XML where they store all the data. That’s why the solution is not to disable modern standby (S3 hybrid sleep), but to disable the Lenovo “enhancements” via a registry key. As long as it’s a software issue and not in the EC, I guess it’s “easily” solvable if the manage to pin it down.

Re:T14s extreme throttling (<0.5ghz instead of 3-4.5ghz)

So we've been having the exact same issues with a P14s Gen 2 laptop which is brand new. No BIOS or driver updates have resolved the issues, so we are returning it and switching to another manufacturer. It's quite a shame really because our old Lenovo laptops have been solid so we were sad to stop buying Lenovo. However, these issues are just so serious that we do not feel that this laptop will last the year.

  • Even with the latest BIOS update, still getting throttling below 0.5GHz in both 'Better performance' and 'Best performance'
  • Happens during Zoom calls and while doing other fairly mundane tasks but happens even more frequently during heavy loads, so the higher the load the more likely the throttling is to occur (which is the opposite of what you want it to do!)
  • Using Open Hardware Monitor shows the CPU temperatures hitting 100C on every boot and then again at random intervals, even while idle
  • Hard drive is at 60-70C which is too hot for my liking
  • Fans are always on even while idle; old Lenovo laptops run completely silent unless under load

Hope you guys find a resolution eventually (if you haven't already) but for us it's goodbye.

Brand new p14s gen 2 (Intel) here.  I noticed this throttling issue, but the laptop went back for service anyways after s3 power settings fried the T500 graphics (display turns off? better shut down the fans but keep the gpu and cpu running!  what could go wrong!)

Latest bios, latest win10 build.  Just fired it up, and all cores are throttled at .39ghz.  The year is 2021 and my cpu is running slower than a p3.  It usually snaps out of it for 5-10 minutes if I move the power setting back and forth and back and forth from balanced to high performance.  Super frustrating.

If it might be a presence issue like recently quoted, and is related with video calls...

have you guys tried disabling the internal video camera and using an external one to see if it will make any difference?

Delete MSFT Teams and OBS Studio. Junk software causing all kinds of problems IMO. Also install an app called LatencyMon to see if any clues. It helped me tremendously from excess fan noise. NVME driver was a major issue. Use the manufactuer's driver not MSFT's. I run a P43s with none of the problems I read about here except when I use MSFT Teams and OBS and if in combination my computer locks up into a hardware junk.

My issue is not application dependent, and has no correlation to conferencing software.  It happens with Chrome, with Spotify, with games, etc.
