Re:T14s extreme throttling (<0.5ghz instead of 3-4.5ghz)

2021-10-06, 11:50 AM

the latest BIOS update, in conjunction with the Intelligent Thermal Solution Driver should fix the issue, but there might be further updates for Zoom and MS Teams required.

Oh yikes.. let me tell you what happened last week when I updated to that ITS driver (I already had the latest BIOS in place). In the following week after installing the new driver I had multiple occasions where I would lock and close the laptop for it to go to sleep. The next morning it wouldn't wake up, power led was on but that was it. Had to hold the power button to shut it off. First time after that it would not start again at all, again had to power off after waiting 5 mins. Then it started but asked me to unlock my drive with my BitLocker key, which I have never seen before. On more hard shutoff and it started again like normal. Scary.

Then a few days later I closed the lid it went to sleep and I wake up to the laptop being hot and the fan was spinning at full speed, luckily I had enough airflow, imagine if this happened in my laptop bag! Similar procedure as above, had to power off and on a few times, with another bitlocker screen.

This happened once more in the middle of the day, coming back from lunch, without even closing the lid, just locking Windows.

Then it hit me: of course, I had the thermal driver running again. Disabled the thermal service again: all good, perfect laptop.

Needless to say, all this is quite nuts. 🙁

Re:T14s extreme throttling (<0.5ghz instead of 3-4.5ghz)

Thank you, @Juraj_Lenovo ,for the linked article, it seems this is the issue what my laptop has. The throttling, however, happens even when YouTube is running - it does not need to be Teams or a similar video conferencing app in general.

The Intelligent Thermal Solution driver on my T14 is on v2.0.382.3 (the article refers to 2.0.369.1 and earlier versions as affected), so further versions appear to be affected as well. Also, my power settings are already set to 'Better performance' and yet the problem still persists, so the workaround does not work on my model.

Here is a fresh screenshot showing one video running on the Intel GPU, one on the NVIDIA GPU and the CPU throttling to ~0.5 GHz while the power setting is set to the recommended workaround value.

PS: Does the workaround meant to say the slider should be set to 'Best performance'? The throttling stops when I change to this setting, however the fans starts spinning on maximum making it noisy and the laptop gets hotter in general.

I have seen that article and I think I pasted it here.

And I wrote this workaround didn't work

article says: "Lenovo is providing the following workaround while working toward a long term solution."

Article is from March. My question is how much more we should wait for this long term solution?

Anyway I am posting this message because you may try this

https://bradshacks.com/disable-dptf/

Use reg files and uninstall DPTF. Maybe this will help for some time as a workaround.

Just make sure devices won't come back after restart (this is what registry is for)

Re:T14s extreme throttling (<0.5ghz instead of 3-4.5ghz)

Just to give everyone a quick update. I ended up sending the laptop back for a repair per Lenovo's request. The long story short is that the laptop came back with a new logic board inside, and the throttling problem still exists.

I managed to reproduce the problem reliably: Start Windows with the latest drivers, BIOS, and updates installed. I only need to open one video from YouTube in Google Chrome using the integrated Intel video card, and open a second video in Firefox (forcing with a 'High Performance' setting to use the NVIDIA video card). Once both videos start playing, the CPU immediately starts throttling to the 0.40 GHz - 0.60 GHz range.

This is the second logic board in this laptop, so my impression is that either nobody knows at Lenovo what the problem is or this T14 Gen 1 model has a serious design flaw that is simply unrepairable.

I just wrote Lenovo Support back to ask for a full refund ... will see how it turns out.

Thank you for sharing this. I hope someone from Lenovo will notice this and try to reproduce.

You gave pretty good steps!

It's super sad that Lenovo Service are focusing on quickest solution (ie. replacing motherboard) rather than investigating issues.

But I guess this is most effective way of solving things when users have onsite repair and diagnostics are remote.

During my adventure with Lenovo I remember we replaced many motherboards and problems still persisted. So much waste. :(

Even here with this particular issue (I read in this thread and others like 'Carbon X1') I saw that users had 2-3 times replaced motherboards without fix.

Like I wrote in some post: If you have that issue you need to mention to service that replacing motherboard will not help. It's pointless.

I hope your story will have a good end and global fix! :)

Hello, I have a similar issue on a brand new P15 - all updated to the latest everything.

My question to all of you is, does the throttling happen on battery power or on AC power or on both? Please let me know.

On my P15, the laptop runs great on battery power, but when I plug in the power adapter it slows down to a crawl. I can see the throttling in the Task Manage under performance.

I don't know if this is coincidence or not, but unplugging and re-plugging the power adapter sometimes speeds things up back to normal.

It may have something to do though how far the battery is already charged.

I do notice that when the battery is below e.g. 80% and I boot the computer with the power adapter plugged in, it takes forever to boot.

Unplug the power adapter and back to full speed.

Is this maybe related to the T14 problem?

If you install the Intel Extreme Tuning Utility you can see if its thermal or power limit throttling. I have a P43s, the precursor to the P14 and have not had the problems persistently cited on this board. I'm typing this in FireFox and doing some Excel work and only see power limit throttling on my machine.

In my case, I can literally reproduce the throttling issue immediately after cold-booting Windows and opening two browsers running a YouTube video in each window. It has nothing to do with overheating, but poor design.
