T15 gen1 new BIOS version 1.21 Thunderbolt issue

2021-07-22, 7:01 AM

Hello,

Updating a T15 gen1 (model 20S6CTO1WW) to BIOS/UEFI 1.21 breaks thunderbolt functionality (i have a ThinkPad Thunderbolt 3 Dock Gen 2 with up-to-date firmware).

Note: the Thunderbolt firmware is up-to-date (version 1.41.1054.0)

I've tested:

  • With Windows 10 (20h2 with up-to date Thunderbold driver)
  • With Debian testing based Linux distribution
  • All the thunderbolt security mode in BIOS configuration
  • Reset BIOS settings to default

The Thunderbolt functionality is working once in 4 reboot, the other time the docking stations falls back to USB3 mode.

Reverting to BIOS/UEFI 1.20 makes Thunderbolt working as it should.

I seem to have similar problems, but how can I revert to BIOS/UEFI 1.20?

I'm asking because the readme op BIOS 1.55 clearly states:

 If the UEFI BIOS has been updated to version 1.52 or higher, it is no longer
  able to roll back to the version before 1.52 for security improvement.

You can roll back from 1.21 to 1.20.

But it is not possible to roll back to version before 1.17:

I would suggest checking with the technical support team first before any decision of BIOS rollback, especially for in-warranty machines.

Re:T15 gen1 new BIOS version 1.21 Thunderbolt issue

Hi!
Same issue here, T15 gen1 (model 20S6002EGE) and ThinkPad Thunderbolt 3 Dock Gen 2.

16.07.2021 the BIOS Update 1.21 was installed.

Everthing up to date. Installed newest version of the thunderbolt dock firmware.

Currently this breakes my desk setup with two monitors. Docking station is regognized but not the monitors.

I would say one of ten reboots it works.

@tonymontana How did you rollback your BIOS to version 1.20? Did you just install the BIOS version 1.20?

Hi!

Download the 1.20 bootable CD image (https://download.lenovo.com/pccbbs/mobiles/n2xur11w.iso) and 'copy' it on a USB key.

I'm using Linux, so first i use geteltorito tool to extract the boot image from the CD iso:

$ geteltorito -o n2xur11w.img n2xur11w.iso

And i write it to the USB key:

$ sudo dd if=n2xur11w.img of=/dev/yourusbkey

$ sync

Finally, i boot the USB key with the F12 boot menu.

Same issue with T14 G1, resolved by rolling back to 1.20.

Re:T15 gen1 new BIOS version 1.21 Thunderbolt issue

Thanks for details. I am currently on win10 and did the BIOS rollback to 1.20 a few minutes ago and my monitors were recognized by TB3 and docking station again.

I downloaded the update from the lenovo product site, disabled the the rollback secure feature in BIOS and executed the update .exe file.

Interesting is that the BIOS version 1.21 is not available on the product site, only version 1.20 can be downloaded.

Yes, i think the issue has been reported to the technical support and is under investigation. In the meantime, they deleted the 1.21 link.
