T400 - 6-cell battery - Lasts only 2 hours?

2008-08-28, 22:47 PM

With my battery at 100% on my T400 2764-CTO, I took it into work and turned it on unplugged. I was a bit dismayed to see that the battery estimated 1.5 hours of use. So I went into power management and turned everything down all the way, to the point where the screen was so dim it was almost unusable. After a few moments, the battery estimation recalibrated to 2 hours.

I had read from multiple sources that the 6-cell battery was supposed to last around 5.5 hours, but for some reason mine lasts only 2 hours. Is there such a thing as a bad battery? Has anyone else noticed this?

Re: T400 - 6-cell battery - Lasts only 2 hours?

I just got off the phone with tech support and was told that the advertised 5.5 hours of a 6-cell battery is if the laptop is in sleep mode the entire time. But if the laptop is actually being used, the battery will last only 2 to 2.5 hours. For a 4-cell battery, usage time is 1 to 1.5 hours. For a 9-cell battery 2.5 to 3.5 hours.

Wow.

I would consider this to be false advertising. No one cares how long a battery lasts if the laptop is in sleep mode the entire time. People inquire about about the longevity of a battery charge so they know how long they can actually USE the laptop, not how long the laptop can sleep.

I thought these batteries were supposed to be superior to the previous versions. I have a T41 with a 9-cell battery that lasts 5 hours - almost twice as long as the new and improved 9-cell battery for the T400.

This is just idiotic.

i would have thought the T400 would use less battery then a comparable spec T6x.

Geronimosan,

Battery consumption depends on several variables. I think you need to try the following.

Turn off the descrete graphics, reduce the brightness to about 40%, make sure you are not playing any DVD/CDs. Doing normal work should give you about 3.5 to 4 hours.

If the battery still lasts only 2 hours, reset your battery (from Power Manager). After resetting the battery switch the Power Manager to advanced mode and check "Full Charge Capacity" as well as "Design Capacity."

Considering the laptop is almost new your "Full Charge Capacity" should be equal or better than the "Design Capacity." After one year's use the "Full Charge Capacity" should still be at least 70% of the "Design Capacity."

If this is not the case then ask for battery replacement.

I would add that a new battery must learn it´s capacity.

Try to load your battery pack 36h, then unload, then 24h load, then unload.

Now it should´ve been calibrated.

Also what Bajpai has already said is true and i would here add, to let your AC connected,
when on desk and leave your battery in the machine.

Someone at tech support is blowing smoke up your shorts. The useful life for the batteries as given in the product's description is while operating, not in standby. "6-cell: up to 6.5 hr; 6-cell plus Ultrabay battery: up to 8.0 hr; 9-cell: up to 9.8 hr." Your T400 will remain in Standby for approximately a week or more on battery alone.

It will take a few depletion/charge cycles for the battery to calibrate itself to its full potential, but if it continues to last less than two hours or so, get it replaced under warranty.

Regards,

James

How much of a difference could you expect between the original capacity and full (post-calibration) capacity?

If my searching is correct, the 2764 T400's use the ATI switchable graphics. If you are running on discrete graphics, this will severely diminish your runtime compared to integrated. Try switching to integrated graphics if you haven't already.
