Re: T400 Dock Problem

2008-09-18, 13:05 PM

@ pshifrin,

Sorry, I forgot you, sintermaeaetes' post post reminded me. My bad :smileysad:

Just been playing with a T400, 2765-TDG, which has the fancy switchable graphics.

If you have integrated graphics or switchable graphics selected in BIOS the DVI Boot Display Device option is not available, with discrete graphics it is.

I guess you have to leave discrete graphics selected.

The T6* with integrated graphics has BIOS DVI support, it would appear that when in this mode the T400 does not.

Hope this helps

PS. cklemmer and sintermaeaetes, welcome to the forum.

Andy

I have a 7417CTO and I was experienceing the same problem. Selecting discrete graphics in the BIOS config solved it. Although I still can't select DVI as my boot display, it still works.

Thanks,

Jim

Hi,

i'm thinking of buying a T400 (Modell 585D750 2767-ST Vista. I don't know if this is available everywhere, as this is supposed to be some special student edition). This model also comes with the two two graphic cards (intel and amd). Is it likely this issue will be solved?  This workaround seems to be really annoying when using the notebook without the docking station frequently, since you have to switch the option in the bios every time you want to switch the graphics adapter.

Tarzan23,

I am able to use my t400 docked or undocked with the same bios configuration, so it isn't that bad. However, I agree the problem should be fixed. If they are going to advertise swichable graphics, it should actually work in that mode.

Thank you very much for the warm welcome :)

Yes. this really helps me. As I planned to use the discrete graphics exclusively anyway, I consider this solved. Anyone with experiences using the Advanced Mini Dock and Linux? Any issues that I should be aware of? I am especially interested in whether docking the T400 (with display attached to the dock DVI) will make the external DVI appear as connected so it can be activated using XRandR. This is important becaus I will be moving the system back and forth between work (where I will be using external VGA) and home (where I will get a Advanced Mini Dock).

If everything works out, I will order my T400 tomorrow :)

I spoke to Lenovo about this.  They are working on a bios update that will allow you to choose LCD and DVI with switchable graphics running.  Until then, if you open the lid on your laptop, you can login, it will find the DVI external monitor and then you can close the lid.  Its a work around until the update is released.

Tried your suggestion but it sleeps everytime i shut the lid.

I have the T400 with the duo video and advanced dock.  Went out and picked up a 24 inch monitor only to find that it doesn't work.  Guess I'll have to wait till the new bios comes out but I also find myself scratching my head wondering why this function would not be available since the previous T series had this functionality.

Final question is will I lose the crisp resolution if I go with the discrete option via DVI vs. the current ATI card?

Sleeping when you shut the lid has nothing to do with the display type or BIOS. Go to the power management options. There is a setting that controls what happens when you close the lid. Set it to "do nothing".

To get my external, DVI monitor to work for booting up, I had to set the BIOS for discrete graphics (not switchable) and an analog monitor. The graphics look great and my laptop works with it either docked or undocked using the laptop's display. I am completely satisfied with the solution, but unless Lenovo wants to provide lots of support, they need to change the BIOS so that people can figure our how to configure it in a more intuitively obvious way.

I hope this helps!

Jim

Thanks Jim for your addition.  I like the switchable graphics feature and while your solution is a good fix for now, its a real drag when you are on an airplane watching a movie or working and you need integrated graphics to save power.  Going into the bios each time is not a solution.  Come on Lenovo, release the bios fix!

The BIOS update to fix this is coming.  Just released for the T500s.  Look for BIOS v 1.18 on the downloads soon.  Also, an update to the switchable driver is now available that is needed prior to the BIOS update.  I've been dealing with this for a long time now.  The workaround is to open the lid when booting.
