They just released bios 1.19 and it DOES NOT provide a solution for this!

Re: T400 Dock Problem

2008-11-25, 22:11 PM

I have a different sort of dock problem with my T400, maybe someone has had experience with (also posted in this thread)...

I just set up my T400 and Advanced Mini Dock.  I have had no problems setting up the second monitor or eithernet connections.  However I have two issues, my computer does not recognize...

1. Speakers plugged into the dock

2. USB peripherals plugged into the dock.

No install disk came with the dock, am i supposed to download drivers of some kind?  Any help would be appreciated, thanks.

Run system update and make sure all your Thinkvantage utilities and drivers are installed properly.

I'm not sure if this is related or not, or if a solution is known, but here's the problem I'm having.

- T400 w/ Switchable Graphics

- Default BIOS settings

- Advanced Mini-Dock plugged into a VGA monitor (not via DVI)

When I boot the laptop on the dock, I see nothing on the monitor.  It seems to completely ignore it.  I'm not even in the OS yet, just referring to the BIOS screen, etc...  Same things goes for the VGA port on the laptop itself.

Is this expected behavior?  WIth my Toshiba, it always just replicated the displays.

Jeff,

This is the same problem from a few messages back. The system will not use an external monitor while starting up when the BIOS is set to switchable graphics. We have been told this problem would be resolved in version 1.18 of the BIOS. I am running 1.19 and it still doesn't work. You have two options.

  1. Leave your BIOS set to switchable graphics and startup with the lid open. Once you login, the external minitor will be recognized and you can close the lid. You also need to set your power settings to "do nothing" when you close the lid.
  2. Set you BIOS for discrete graphics and it will startup using the external monitor if attached or the internal monitor if no external is attached. The only disadvantage to this is that discrete graphics uses more power, so your battery doesn't last as long. I'm not on battery much, so I chose this one.

Jim

Well that's annoying.

I assume then also, when resuming from sleep or just unlocking the machine, the lid would have to be open so that you could log in?

Does this workaround apply to VGA output or just DVI?

Do you know if 1.18 was ever released for T400?  Looking at the change history, it looks identical to the T500 except for that all fixes in 1.18 don't seem to be there.  Seems strange that they have the exact same version numbers and change history, but skipped this set.

Do you have a contact at Lenovo you could ask?

My T400 was shipped with Bios Version 1.18. I have recently updated to 1.19.

I have alerted Lenovo to the problem.  They released 1.19 but skipped 1.18.  1.18 is needed to fix this problem as 1.19 was not comprehensive.I
