Re: T400 Dock Problem

2009-09-19, 23:18 PM

Hi jbum,

As I know (I got this information from a lenovo Product site of the dock), the DVI port is only available with descrete graphic. The words at the lenovo site are: "DVI(not supported by ThinkPads with integrated graphics)". There is no physical connection between the intel graphics and the DVI port. It's a scandal but what can we do.....

Hope I answered your question.

Oh well... that does explain it.  Unfortunate.

VGA on the dock should still work for you. The USB adapter options also should work.

Re: T400 Dock Problem

Yeah, pretty much everything else works as far as I can tell.  However, I think I found a bug with my hardware from a post I encountered in the forums that described my problem exactly (minus the "dual" monitor part).

http://forums.lenovo.com/t5/T400-T500-and-newer-T-series/T400-dual-monitors-on-dock-with-Intel-graphics/m-p/159753#M15685

Apparently, there is something out of spec on the main board of the T400 machines of type 7417-xxx.  I'm not sure if they are fixed now but mine behaves exactly as this poster explains it.

The funny thing is Dell monitors for some reason are compatible and work without any problems.  I even verified this.  Since my home monitor isn't a Dell... i called support and mentioned the above post and they eventually let me send it in to have it repaired.  They think it's the connection to the docking station but whatever the case they will replace the main board and test it before sending it back.

Hopefully, that helps others having the same issue as me... but according to the other post, it seems to be a problem with 7417-xxx machines only, and only those with the integrate graphics chip.

This is an old thread, but wanted to set the record straight. The best source of information I'm aware of as to which ThinkPads support DVI through the Advanced Mini Dock or Advanced Dock is:

http://www-307.ibm.com/pc/support/site.wss/MIGR-72148.html

It clearly shows that the T400 with integrated (Intel) graphics does support DVI pass-through.

:

I see in another post that you sent your T400 in for service. Are you still having trouble with DVI output?

Best regards,

Frank

Yes, I sent it in for service and also got the mainboard replaced onsite as well.

However, nothing solved the issue for me.  I'm still waiting on support to contact me after working with the engineering team to troubleshooting this issue.  The case has been open for almost 3 months with absolutely no progress and little communication - most of it initiated by me.

The DVI is supposed to work but apparently there is something out of spec enough to cause issues at least for 7417-XXX models of the T400.  It only works on certain monitors like Dell (which I've confirmed) but my laptop refuses to work on my Viewsonic monitor which works fine with my older T61p using the same docking station (advanced mini)

If possible, could you please post the model numbers of the Dell and Viewsonic monitors you've tried? (If you have additional specs like native resolution that would be great as well.)

Thanks,

Frank

The Dell monitor, which did work at work (no pun intended), was either the 2407wfp or 2408wfp.  I am not at work today so I can be 100% sure.  The native resolution is 1900x1200.

There was another thread that I wrote on which mentions that some Dell monitors work (http://forums.lenovo.com/t5/T400-T500-and-newer-T-series/T400-dual-monitors-on-dock-with-Intel-graphics/m-p/159753#M15685)  -- message 28.

The Viewsonic monitor I use at home is the VG2030wm (1680x1050 native).

Hi jbum,

Could you please confirm the model type number of your T400? I assume 7417-something?

Have you tried the latest BIOS? The BIOS changelog lists some fixes that might apply to you:

Version 3.11-1.06

  • (New) Added support for 1600x900 screen resolution on an external monitor.

Version 3.06-1.03

  • (Fix) Fixed an issue where some DVI monitors did not work.

I know the 1600x900 resolution added in 3.11 isn't what you're trying for, but who knows, it might fix other resolutions as well.

If you do update your BIOS, I highly recommend that you burn the update CD and boot from it to do the update.

Good luck,

Frank

My model number is 7417-CTO.  The currently installed BIOS version is 3.09.

According to System Update, 3.09-1.05 is the latest BIOS for my system and was issued around 2009/11/27
