T400 Fan issue

2012-09-06, 2:42 AM

I believe my T400 7417-RH4 is having an overheating problem. I run it for about 10 minutes and it locks up and shuts down and tries to reboot. I have been fighting with this thing for a couple weeks and got it almost running.

Ilet me buddy have a crack at it and it run for 4 hours with no problems. I get it back home and it does it to me again.

The difference....he had it on a cooling pad, I didn't'

Now I see fans for:

integrated video 45N 6140 & 45N 6142

discreet video 45N 6146 & 45N 6144

How do I tell if I have integrated or discreet, or even switchable???

how do I know what fan to buy??

'evening.

i think you've actually got a 7417 ;) as i can find no reference to a 7414 T400.

here's what Lenovo reports:

ThinkPad T400 (7417-RH4)
P8600(2.4GHz), 2GB RAM, 320GB 5400rpm HD, 14.1in 1440x900 LCD, Intel 4500MHD, CDRW/DVDRW, Intel 802.11agn wireless, WWAN upgradeable, Bluetooth, Modem, 1Gb Ethernet, Ultranav, Secure chip, 6c Li-Ion, WinVista Home Premium 32

so... integrated graphics.

looking at the hardware maintenance manual: http://download.lenovo.com/pccbbs/mobiles_pdf/43y6629_04.pdf pg275-276

there are 3 fan/heatsinks listed for integrated graphics models:
45N6140, 45N6142, 45N5710

all cross-reference to 7417-all, so my guess is that they are functionally equivalent.

hth.

Before you rush into replacing the fan, make sure that you actually have an overheating problem. Download HWInfo32 or TPFanControl and monitor the temperature.

In my opinion, idle temperatures above 55 or load temperatures above 90 are a sign of trouble.

Stupid question.....Fahrenheit? or celcuis??

Also I installed HWinfo32, ran my T400 on a chill pad for 20 minutews, no problem.

Took it off the chill pad and 5 minutes later it froze up. Unfortunately I had the status box minimized and could not read the results

I tried to install TPfancontroller, downloaded the zip file, would not unzip. I then downloaded the exe file but when I tried to run it I got an error saying something about required winio file missing, but it was there, unless something inside the folder was missing.
Does anybody have a link to a working version of TPfancontrol?
I would like to turn my fan on sooner to avoid overheating.

this is the official link: http://staff-www.uni-marburg.de/~schmitzr/tpfc_v062.zip

one file inside: setup.exe, 557247 bytes.

have you pulled the keyboard lately to clean out any dust on the fan and in the heatsink exhaust vanes?

regards.

I blew everything out when I picked it up last month, I might pull the fan to clean it properly and apply new heat sink paste. Although a new fan isn't too much money.

refreshing the thermal compound is a pretty straightforward job. i generally do it to older machines that i acquire 2nd hand as a part of initial maintenance and checkout.

were you able to get a good copy of tpf from the link i provided?

regards.
