T400, Radeon 3470HD and memory

2008-11-04, 10:31 AM

I have just got a new T400 with the Radeon 3470HD and I realize the shared memory used by the graphics card is huge. I have 4Gb RAM installed in the notebook and here is my observation when I use the switchable GPU:

Under the Physical Memory in Windows Task Manager, I have only a total of 2517MB of RAM.

Under Display Setting -> Advanced -> Adapter, the Shared System Memory is 1003MB, Dedicated Video Memory is 256MB and Total Available Graphics Memory is 1259MB.

Is this normal or expected? I find it unbelievable as the graphic card eats up more than 1Gb of my RAM.

Well, the memory figures are the same for my system as well.

I don't know the reason for sure but it could more be due to dynamic allocation of memory. I have been under the impression that since there is a dedicated memory card, RAM should not be used for graphics processing. Also, Windows Vista 32-bit is not yet capable of utilizing the entire 4 Gb of memory. The best utilization is probably 3 Gb. But then how this memory allocation take place is still a mystery.
