T400 SSD Sata III 6 Gbps

2011-08-11, 17:08 PM

Hello,

I am thinking to change my Hitachi 320 Gb  Sata Harddrive that came with my T400 for a Solid State Drive to give my computer a bit of speed.

I was thinking in the Crucial 128 GB m4 SATA 6Gb/s 2.5-Inch Solid State Drive by Lexar, as I have read that it gives very good performance.

My questions are:

1º is this hard drive compatible with my T400?

2º will I achieve the performance of this drive (6gbps) with my laptop? or the T400 is just SATA2.

Thanks in advance for the answers.

T400 = 3GB SATA II.

1) Yes it is compatible

2) No T400 only supports SATA 2, 3.0 GB/sec. Your SSD will run at a much lower than advertised speed (likely as fast as SandForce based SSDs).

Actual data throughput for anything but benchmarking will not be much different on SATA II or SATA III.

Cheers,

Thank you very much for your comments :smileyhappy:

Therefore, I will not notice any difference in performance between (for example) intel 320 and intel 510 series (Sata II and Sata III series)? There will be also not firmware update to support sata 3 on the T400?

Have you experience with some SSD? I would like a reliable one (heard many stories of users loosing all data) and performance, as I am buying this one basically to give a boost to my 3 year old lappy

Thank you!:robothappy:

the lack of the SATA6 support is a hardware limitation not a firmware limitation, so update won't resolve the issue.

Since I am reading about the problems of SSD I am a bit concerned about reliability of SSD drives. Experts states that 3rd generation SSD (SataIII) are not mature enough.

What you guys think? Any recommendations?

I would avoid any Sandforce drives (Corsair, Kingston, Patriot, OCZ, OWC & MemoRight) and the more recent Intels (320 & 510). Older Samsung drives (OEM models) and Intel (X-25) seem to be better in the reliability department.

X1 Carbon 3rd Gen Type 20BT i7-5500U, 2560x1440 (non-touch), Win 10 Pro, 8GB RAM, 512 SSD, Intel 7625 WiFi, BT 4.0 | ThinkVision P24q-10 monitor

I wonder if the ThinkPad T420 4178A2G has a Sata III?
